Title: Clever way to get old shift shaft seal out?
Post by: TheRadBaron on March 10, 2012, 12:08:45 PM
My shifter shaft oil seal is leaking and I plan to replace it.  Removing the old one is of course going to be tricky.  On other bikes in the past I've drilled small holes around the seal face and used sheet metal screws to pull the old seal out, but I've only had marginal success with this method, and damaged the shift shaft one time.  Does anyone know a better way?

Remove the snap-ring & washer. Take a small pocket size screwdriver and insert it between the shaft & seal. The seal will pry right out. There is not much of a interference fit on the outside surface.

Thanks.  I'll give that a try.

Well, I got it out.  I couldn't get the small screwdriver trick to work, so I used a "dental pick" tool with a 90 degree bend on the end.  I just hooked it in a few different places around the seal and tugged until it came out.  Hopefully this cures the leak that's soiling the whole underside of my bike.
