And rived it slightlyto and hitI the killinspection switch....thats all ithe did yesterday.Yesterday my 1991 FJ started up....it took a bit but it started. This morning, it wouldn (popcorn)'t start all. Normally when I turn it on, the fuel pupm makes its normal start up noise. Howver, this time...nothing. when I hit the starter there wasn't any noise at all...no cranking, clicking, ect...nothing. I did smell gas right away before starting and when I hit the starter button, only the fuel light and oil light come on (headlight stays on ). I'm thinking the fule pump? I only ran it for a couple minutes yesterday. Just before turning it off, I rived it slightly then hit the kill switch....that's it. I do know my starter clutch is going out but it at least still makes some noise....this time nothing...almost like the battery wasn't even plugged in.
I'd check three things (in this order):
1) battery
2) Battery
3) BATTERY

Did someone say BATTERY (http://www.rpmracingca.com/proddetail.asp?prod=91-93AGM)?

How about the nuetral switch? If it's faulty it could be thinking it's in a gear instead of neutral. Try it with the clutch lever pulled in..
Or the kill switch could be faulty, not sure how you'd check for that other than disassembling the switch block

Do the EASY things first! Verify the battery is good or bad before you start pulling things apart. Even a bad battery can hold a 12 volt surface charge, measure the voltage under load.
If NOTHING is happening at all, it's the battery!!!!

nice plug love it (popcorn) (popcorn) (popcorn) (popcorn)

If it is not the battery check your fuses if not these it sounds like a neutral switch problem or a kill switch problem ,try to start it with the sidestand up,and the clutch lever in this should eliminate problems with the neutral switch next check the kill switch is working, I found that if you put a spark plug in one of the plug caps and if you flick it on and leave it for a few seconds without doing anything else you get a spark at the plug for some reason At least I do, dont know about any body else. If this doesnt work check the switch with a meter and check wiring connectors at the multiplug
If everything seems Ok It may be the lockout relay wich is located next to the indicator relay, simplest chek on this is to see if it clicks as the various switches are operated as though they would stop the engine running(eg sidestand down with the bike in gear). again check wiring connections
I hope its something simple
Good luck

Also, open up the right bar switch and use contact cleaner on the whole area. That might help.
Good luck,

That was pretty smooth :good: (http://www.rpmracingca.com/proddetail.asp?prod=91-93AGM) wasn't it.

Hey all...Thanks for all the replies. I really don't think it's the battery because it's pretty new - replaced it this past summer. It could be the kill switch - I didn't think about so I'll certainly try spraying contact cleaner on that - and I didn't think about the neutral safety switch. The only problem with testing that is this bike has never liked starting with the clutch in...go figure...but I will try starting it at least with the kickstand up (and maybe with the clutch pulled in). The only thing that makes me feel it isn't any of that is the fact that I smelled gas as soom as I opened the garage door (not sure if all that got in my post...was trying to use my "smart phone" and apparently my message didn't get typed out too well...sorry).
Thanks again guys :good2:

If I had a dollar for everytime I've heard that on this forum - and it ended up being the battery - I'd be a rich man. Seriously dude - 9 times out of 10 what you are describing turns out to be the battery. Listen to the listers here before you dick around with everything else...

So Marsh,
If I understand you correctly he should really look at the battery... (http://www.rpmracingca.com/proddetail.asp?prod=91-93AGM)
Is that correct?

If you did smell gas, you might want to make sure the cylinders aren't full of fuel! That could prevent it from turning over.

It will then bend your rods.

Along with filling your crankcase up with gas......
A couple things.... Did you flick the kill switch back to "RUN"? And, why are you using the kill switch, anyways?
1st things, 1st.... Make sure the kill switch is in the "RUN" position, otherwise it won't crank, the pump won't run and the "OIL" and "FUEL" lights will come on when you press the starter switch.

Good point Rich.
Every time I use the kill switch, I end up forgetting to turn off the ignition switch. The headlight stays on and sometimes makes cranking the motor out in the middle of nowhere a bit exciting. I agree, never use the kill switch unless it's an emergency.
DavidR.
Yep, the only bikes I "kill" with the "kill" switch are my dirtbikes...... If it has a keyswitch, that's the one I always use to shut her off.
Me too, I never use the kill switch, for the same reasons mentioned.
Dan
Interesting kill swithch discussion ... I have always used the kill switch
+1. Killswitch, then ignition key, every time. If for no other reason than that I usually keep the brake on until the motor stops.

Same here. It is automatic with me, I was taught to kill the bike that way, the reason being that the kill switch is supposed to be there for emergencies, so you can turn the bike off at the last second without having take a hand off the bars and so keep control until the situation is beyond recovery, like when you need to drop the bike, or something bad is going to happen and power going to coils and fuel pumps is not a good idea. The theory is that if it is second nature to flick it with your thumb before you turn off the key, when you NEED to kill it quick, it's allready ingrained into you to use the kill switch.
Like I said it's automatic for me, same as belting up in a car, or zipping up after a piss.
