Title: The RPM oil cooler wait is over...
Post by: racerrad8 on February 23, 2012, 11:55:54 PM
Well all of the pieces have finally come together and I have listed the new RPM oil cooler kit on my website.

You can find it here; RPM Oil Cooler Kit (http://www.rpmracingca.com/proddetail.asp?prod=M/C:FJCoolerKit)

This cooler offers 60% greater cooling capacity as well as a built in thermostatic control which allows the engine to reach operating temperature quicker. It does all of this in the same space as the O.E. cooler. No cutting or trimming of the fairing required, just bolt it on and go.

Here is the photo of the completed kit.

I put this kit together with high quality products. I have used Fragola A/N fittings & hose which are American manufactured parts, I do not want to skimp on quality using offshore hose & fittings which could result in a failure.

Please visit www.RPMracingCa.com (http://www.rpmracingca.com) for more information.

Thank you, Randy - RPM

Looks good, Randy, and the price seems right.  Interesting cooler design that doesn't use a thermostatic bypass.

Do you think there would be any benefit to installing a check valve to keep it from draining?

Thanks, I have to thank all of the people who help me do the testing and provided my with the feedback needed to make sure it addressed the issues that have been documented over the years.

The internal design by the manufacture allows the cooler to bypass instead of having a thermostatic component in the system that could fail.

Just like the factory cooler, it should not drain. The pressure side is closed and does not allow drain back. If the pressure side stays filled the return side cannot vent and drain, so the cooler stays filled.

Does it matter if it drains?

Isn't it just a circulator; pulling oil from the pan, cooling it, then returning it there?

IIRC, it's NOT on the engine oil pressure circuit (is it?).

You are correct, it is just for cooling purposes only. But regardless, it should not drain back since the pressure side is holding the oil and not allowing the return side to drain.

Yes the cooler is still available. I don't know if the price has increased from when it was originally offered.

The lines can either come together at the center where the factory lines where mounted or some guys cross them.

It doesn't matter, the flow is non-directional through the cooler.

Questions......

The top "L" brackets with the pins are shown in these pictures mounted both in front of, as well as behind the the top flange of the oil cooler - is there a right way?

Also, curious if the lines are long enough to run them through the stock "line holder" that mounts to the engine?  Is it better to let the line be disconnect and with no possibility of heat transfer through contact with the head?

I am underway installing my kit....    :pardon:

Yes, that looks good Tim. I too crossed my oil cooler lines like you show.

Re: Oil Line Stress Relief:
Originally with the RPM cooler I was concerned about the weight of the braided stainless AN oil lines on the bottom AN fittings (going into the oil pan)  Weight and engine vibrations affecting the oil filled hoses cracking the lower aluminum AN fittings, but happy to report, all has been fine for the last 10 years.

Cheers

Pat

There is no need to put the lines in the stock holder.

The brackets can be fitted front or back but look better mounted in the back a bit more out of site and not as eye catching with the raw aluminum in front of black cooler

Thanks Robert - I mounted the brackets at the rear as suggested.

Pat - that's not my bike. The RPM instruction call for the lines to run behind the engine mount bolt on a 1992 FJ. I hooked the lines up crossed and they were tight and under more tension going behind the engine mount flange bolt so I went with straight.

Robert - how critical is it for the lines to run behind the mount bolt?  What is the reasoning for that routing?

I am playing with the stock line holder and will probably leave it off - decision today.

Cheers!

Just keeps it a bit further from the header and the heat.

The stock bracket was there to prevent the steel portion of the stock oil line from vibrating and cracking.

When converting to the RPM cooler system, that bracket is no longer needed.
