Title: Transmission Reassembly
Post by: nvmike24 on February 14, 2012, 06:09:30 PM
I have installed the Undercut Gear assembly from Randy. During reassembly I seem to have preload in the "Main Axle Bearing Retainer" as its called on page 3-46 of the Yamaha Service Manual. It is not much preload but I notice some drag when turning the shaft with the retainer installed. Looking from the bottom I do see some flexing of the retainer with the bolts installed. The bearing has a locating ring and it was not removed. I did a trial fit of the lower case to insure the bearing pins were in the correct location prior to sealing it and doing a final torque of the bolts. This is my first FJ engine so I'm not sure if this is normal and I see nothing in the book addressing this concern.
Does anyone have any experience with this item?

Randy are you out there?

maybe you have 1st gear flipped?    i know i had a slight issue with this when i fixed my transmission.

took the gear off the shaft and flipped it over,  put everything back together and it was peachy.

Someplace, I put some pictures of what first gear looks like on the shaft when it's backwards in the gallery.  You'll know on your first test ride if it's backwards.  Don't ask me why I know this.

If the locating pins are not seated correctly, turning the trans over by hand will show an intermittent tight spot.  Don't ask how I know that, either.
