Title: FJ1200 Hardtail Chopper
Post by: Marsh White on February 08, 2012, 01:58:17 PM
I just randomly came across this video on YouTube and I thought I'd share:

FJ1200 Hardtail Chopper (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Vr0mzCtw7U#)

It is certainly not my cup of tea - but I was pretty impressed actually at the thought that went into it.  I have a feeling the builder may have been lurking around our forum...

Nicely done, for what it is...      :pardon:

that s pretty steep steering head angle for a chopper.... and not much of a butt pad to stop you from going off the back when the kookaloo comes.....

be interesting to watch it go around a corner.

KOokaloo! (any way you can)

That's what I was thinking. Nice build but that steep angle makes it look a little odd up front IMO.

Do not want to sit on that seat, don't like sound either, but it has potential.

I personally like individuality, I liked this bike so much that I saved it for future use.
I wished it was mine.I like thinking outside the box, and bobbers with bad ass engines.
Why does everyone in the group insist on going around corners as fast as the throttle will allow?
And it sounds awesome as well.

Because we can.

That "thing" sound like all the Honda/import cars around here with their fart can exhausts. I'd like a bobber with a inline 4 too, but not lose the sound of the inline 4. Nice job, but I have seen nicer jobs done to the bobber bike of all time, the XS650.

And FJs are the original super bike that's why we go around corners fast, and that we can.

Sometimes the box it there for a reason.

As Jeff Hoffman so eloquently put it all the many years ago: "Any NIMROD can twist a throttle.  It takes SKILL to ride a curvy road at speed."

No offense to our draggers, it also takes a ton of skill to cut a good light and time.  I'm referring to the worthless hoard of "custom choppers" that every nimrod seems to be building lately with a 300+ rear tire.  I'm seen 18-wheelers cut a tighter turn.  I actually saw one guy run on to the median while trying to make a simple right turn onto a 3-lane road.  Yeah, I want one of those....

When I was talking about wide open throttles around corners I meant being in the oncomin' lane with your head an inch or two from the pavement.
Last thing I'm goin' to do is havin' to polish my dentures after each ride I take. I was viewin' some of the groups videos submitted and my adrenaline was pumpin' sittin' in the lazy-boy
Some of those mountain rides (with long drop-offs on the other side, cornerin' wide-open and driftin' in the other lane had me lettin' off on the lazy-boys throttle a little.
But I don't mean to stir up bee's around here (I'm a rookie on a FJ 1200 sport bike) so I understand where you veterans are comin' from.
I just don't want to have to read about one of my fellow club members bein' scraped off the road (from cornerin' in the on-comin' lane) or goin' over the side of a mountain due to excessive throttle.
But enough out of my newbie-rookie mouth, ya'll are the experts!
Who knows maybe when I get real familiar with my bike I'll be passin' you in the corners.
                                                            Whotty Whoooo (I mean Kookaloo)

If you compare this group to any other group out there, you'll find that we are far more conservative.  That in no way implies that we are necessarily slow.  You can have a spirited and SAFE ride that's more than enough fun if you follow the proper riding technique and rules.

If you saw any video of someone in this group running wide in corners, that sholld be the very rare exception rather than the rule.  We have very comprehensive safety rules that are discussed before every ride at a rally.  No one is pressured to ride over their head.

It's really something you need to participate in to know the full extent of how safety conscience the group actually is.  These guys taught me how to ride safely AND fast.  Something I continue to stress with my local group of riders.

Also, I know you're just learning you way around here, but passing in corners is STRICTLY FORBIDDEN!

G'Day Rowdy,
it would be easy enough to say 'go to a school" but maybe that's not for you plus the schools can be expensive and a hassle.
mate, here's something you'll get a buzz from.
Hook up with, say, Frankie Moore and T-Roy and go to somewhere like the Blueridge Parkway.
Get in a train with them, Frankie at the front, you in the middle, T-Roy at the rear.
Follow their lines.
They will be gentle to start with.
Trust them, trust your bike and start picking the pace up a bit by bit.
Guarantee that you'll amaze yourself by the end of a days riding with them.
Smooth, safe, fast.

Rowdy, get thee to a good track day school. Jason Pridmore's Star school is outstanding. The instructors will watch your moves and figure out quickly how to improve your style, your braking and your speed. You can ride with others and make some improvement for sure. But the track days, $300 bucks or so plus expenses, they will fix your controls use and your ability to use your body properly on the bike including your feet. Take the mod money and invest some of it in your safety as a rider.

You guy's are right!
Here I was talkin' smack about how ya'll ride when I have'nt even learned sport bike ridin' myself.
and Klavdy here I was expectin' to get an earful from you and all you have ever givin' me is spot on good advice!
I'm goin' to take the groups advice and enroll in a class ($250.00 around here)
Then hopefully hook up with some of Klady's bud's to help with the quality stuff (thank's for openin' up my eyes)
Nothin' but respect for all in the group, and goin' to try my best to tone-down the smack talk.
Ya'll know what your doin' tis I who does'nt.

It's not smack talk mate, you come across as a good bloke, not a dickhead.
I've been to a few schools and stuff but the best fun I've had on a training exercise was with Frankie and T-Roy one day.
The place I was thinking of is not the Blue Ridge but the Cherohala skyway.
What you do,(and I'll probably get hooted at for this) is get a couple of the faster guys, lets say Frankie and t-roy.
Frankie goes in front, you hang just a couple bike lengths behind him then T-Roy is the caboose a couple lengths behind you(shut up Dean)
You need to let go and trust these blokes.
You follow Frankie, he'll gradually pick up the pace, trust him, follow him.
Occasionally glance in the mirror, T-Roy will be there, follow their lines, lean the bike over, only brake when they do.
You will be astounded at how good these bikes are and just how well you can ride it after a while but you really need to relax.
Once you start into a corner, you can literally let go of the bars, the bike will keep on it's committed arc.
If it starts getting a bit too much, that's cool, just back off till the testes relax, then start it again.
Couple days of this mate and you'll be thrilling yourself.
