Title: XJR1200 project
Post by: FJ111200 on February 05, 2012, 09:16:43 AM
Got started on the main task of getting the rolling chassis together for the engine.  FJ 3CV forks and 'bars with an XJR front wheel. Fork legs bored out to take the XJR spindle. The engine is FJ1200 based, with the XJR gear change shaft and clutch pushrod.

Friend of mine is working on an XJR project,

Has he imported the frame?  They're not available over there so i've heard.
Todays effort. Sorry about the picture, dense fog here today and the lens misted up as soon as i got outside.

Well i was originally thinking of going down the cafe racer route, but now i'm leaning toward some sort of street rod, if there is such a thing  :unknown:, but i'll just see which way to go as and when the moment arises  (popcorn)

Got a bit more done this weekend. Electrics are on, not in their final place but on and working, turns over nice, got a spark. FJ1100 electrics all round. Radiator on, oil in engine, FJ1100 tailpiece just an idea at the moment.

Thanks mate, early days yet but we'll see how it pans out.
It's not that big really. Wheels are a bit bigger than FJ's,  and so is the swingarm, those shocks are actually Showa's from an XJ750 Maxim, but the tank is actually smaller than an FJ's at 21litres.

Yeah?
Smaller eh?
Well, you've certainly nailed the proportions, it looks a proper muscle bike.

That bike is a HOT ROD.  Really great looking.   Frame and tank are from an XJ?
Let us know how it all works out, final pics and all.

Got a bit further with it. Raask rearsets look ok, tailpiece is a prototyped, read hacked about, FJ1100, i've got another to make it to the final stage (i think), some better condition XJ750 Maxim shocks by Showa, $12 to buy and $42 to post to UK, but better condition allround and like rocking horse shit over here. The seat unit is a standard XJR that needs a lot of modification to the length and depth.
Had to buy a standard XJR rear brake master cylinder as i'd forgotten that FJ items don't fit, and i've got three of the things spare.
And i'm having some Motad N-eta silencers in black chrome, which are on back order with Motad on their next production run and should be ready in about 10 days.

Very interesting. Can you shorten up that headlight bracket to bring those lights back closer to the fork tubes?
Title: Re: XJR1200 project
Post by: FJ111200 on March 10, 2012, 12:02:34 PM
I could possibly cut them to length a bit, they are a bit too long i know, but the space might fill out a bit once i've got some clocks in there and the hydraulic hoses. Wishful thinking. :negative:

Yeah, what Paddy says, either shorten up the brackets or maybe a bigger light housing?

Couple of mods. Headlight brackets shortened by 2inches and rear frame filled and strengthened.

Looks a bit small for a 1200 when put into perspective.
Took me 8 weeks to get those twin silencers from Motad. :dash2:
Anyway, slowly getting there, still need to figure something out for the tail unit.

That thing needs wheelie bars or a rider with really good wrist control. Great job, that project looks well done and awesome. Does it come in red and White?

Well i was a London despatch rider/courier for 13 years, so does that give me credit in the wrist control department
It's still really thrown together but thanks, rough and ready me, needs a paint job, but if you're good with Paintshop on the old pc then fire away it might just take my fancy. :wacko3:

Is that a Thunder Ace swing arm? Regardless, a hugger from Pyrimid Plastics would look cool.

How long is your wheelbase?

It's a standard XJR1200 twin shock swingarm. Isn't the Thunderace a mono shock?
And the wheelbase is 1500mm, which is exactly the same spec as the 12 and 1300 XJR's. I thought it might have been shorter with using the 3CV forks with the XJR front wheel.
