Hey guys just wondering has anyone had this happen to them ?
After scrapping thru a very low , fast left hander with a slight uphill grade on a great bit of country down south near Berri , i heard the engine on my 84 start a definite knock , as there was nowhere to stop on this bit of twisties i had to keep on & after a couple of mins it went away ????? and hasn't returned thankfully, Anyone had a similar occurrence ?
Any clues would be appreciated

I haven't had this happen with my 86,only the usual ticking from the top end when the engine is quite hot.My first guess would be low oil level :scratch_one-s_head: but not being an expert this is probably b/s.I'm sure one of the many engine guru's will chime in!

Hey Jeff , Thanks mate but oil level was all good , but I'm using royal purple 20/50 $100.00 for 5 litre's its dear shit , maybe not right for bikes ? what do you use

do you still have the stock exhaust?
the header is a double wall design
seen and heard it firsthand when the inner wall of the exhaust header breaks loose from the outer wall and rattles internally.
sounds like a engine death rattle but it's not.
very common occurance and easy enough to verify by pulling the header and inspecting.

Because no one has asked. How fast were you going? What gear were you in? What rpm was it turning?
What kind of fuel was in it? Without any of this info, it is a guessing game. If I had to guess, I would say spark knock but that is a ass,u,me,tion.

I'm getting ready to duck for cover as oil seems to be a controversial topic.....I use....
PENRITE HPR15 SEMI SYNTHETIC 15W-60 EXTRA TEN (cost's ten bucks more than it should?)
I use it even though it say's on the label "not recommended for motorcycles" :shok:.It easily pours into the oil filler hole :good:,has a nice golden colour :good2: and you can even see it through the oil level window :i_am_so_happy:.The fj seems happy with it.It starts and runs and even changes gears,even if second gear is a bit dodgy if you don't shift it right :pardon:
I even throw in...(this is very dangerous territory :flag_of_truce:)about 300ml of....

When I get around to changing the oil,it pours nicely out of the pan and has that satisfying slightly blackened used oil colour.

$100 / 5L is pretty damned steep... regardless of whose dollars it is these days.
Especially since Mobil 1, Rotella, and the like are available for much less.
Hell, even that Amsoil stuff is cheaper than that, I'd guess... :pardon:

I had some concern about a light knocking noise from my engine at idle and was told (by a person very knowledgeable about FJ's) that it was probably the straight cut crank/flywheel gears. When under a load the noise is not present so this theory seems plausible to me.
I use Rotella semi-synthetic 10w-30 (don't tase me bro') $13.00 a gallon at WalMart.
OK Jeff, no flame here. Car oil is not suitable for bike, due shear damaging the oil. The oil is crushed in the transmission, destroying the viscosity of the oil. That's why you typically don't use motor oil in a differential either. I also would skip any additives. If the oil is not up to job, no amount of 3rd party fillers are going to make it better.
I sell & use Amsoil (except for break in oil). If you don't want to spring for Amsoil, get a good quality motorcycle oil that is GL-1 gear oil rated, and also rated for wet clutch use.
Or do what you're doing and let us know how it pans out.
