Title: 1990 fj 1200 increasing revs ? And noisy top end ?
Post by: homer1200 on December 05, 2011, 07:18:18 AM
Just purchased an fj12 which has been stood quite awhile and it starts up ok but then the revs increase on their own and i have to turn off as they won't come down { Odd times they do though but then increase again }and also misfires untill fully warm. The bike has had new plugs and i'm told a service. Are these a bit of a noisy engine as it seems to be rather rattly at tickover but fades when revved up. Seems to be top end scource ? Would a carb problem cause these symptoms ?
Thanks

First off, Welcome Homer,

The reving issue sounds like a carb problem, but mostly like there is an air leak somewhere. Other's here who are more knowledgeable about this will no doubt chime in on that.

The FJ motor is a noisy beast. The ticking you hear in the top end is all normal. Most likely coming from the area of the #3 and 4 cylinder top end. The clutch makes a racket also till warm.

Once you get the idle issue fixed, you are going to love your new FJ as all of us do.

also after you clean and inspect carbs cable ect. Be sure you throttle cable push/pull is adjusted properly mine did the same thing after i reinstalled the carbs. that was the problem. As said before you will love this bike. promise  :i_am_so_happy:

cheers

Thanks for that Silas will strip her down and have look see. Still worried about the noises as its not exactly a ticking noise more of a rattle sound but as i said if i rev her it gos away. Its only at tickover even when warm i find. Only got two owners and done 27000 but been stood 8 years. hmmmm anyway time will tell.
Thanks again  :good:

Welcome I sent u a pm. Noisy valves are happy. Starter chain makes a racket as well if it were a serious as a rod knock or anything like that I would imagine it would do it in all rpm getting louder as they rise. I learned if the see guys say it believe them. They know. The fj engine is damn near bullet proof they don't make em like this no moe

Whats your idle set to? 1,100 rpms is about right, less than 1,000 makes for a noisy top end..

Thanks for the replies.
Difficult to set tickover speed due to carb fault { rising revs and misfire etc } but relieved to know the engine should be sound and nothing serious. Probably been spoilt owning a BM RS1000RR too which is deathly quiet at tickover. Will make a lovely bike i feel when sorted and always wanted one since i remember them coming out new. { Also remember the yds7, h1 kwak , honda cb750 and all the rest from the late sixties early seventies }.
Great forum
Thanks again to everyone.  Ian
