Title: Nov 27 Ride with 4 members - San Diego area and Riverside
Post by: moparman70 on November 27, 2011, 09:42:25 PM
great ride today -- members Fjmonkey - San Dimas Mike - Moparman70 and TerryK -- ride from Oceanside to Palomar Mountain  where the first three  mentioned met TerryK.

Ride continued down East Grade S7 - to 76 - lunch at Hideout - then continued to Julian via Mesa Grande - then 78 to Wynola road to 78 East then to S2 back to 79-- to 371 thru Anza -- left at 74 to 243 to Idlywild -- then home for all

Thanks to Terry K for coming out it was good to meet you and hope to see you on more rides.  Sorry we didn't get a chance to say good bye but I thought you were going to go to Temecula via 79 so we didnt stop at that intersection.

Best way I know to spend a Sunday -- my total miles 288.9  - moving time total 5hr51mins  - stop time 2hours. Calculated miles on last tank a whopping 45mpg -- this surprised me...as most at mountain speed/accel /many curvesssss.

Here are some pics

What a great ride. Thanks for organizing this and letting me tag along. Really like the "87 in front of the Hideout, ok, thats my bike and all the other bikes were excellent. BTW - great riders. Moved right along.

Great ride with some great roads . :good2:

I used to live near Anza years ago , In fact there are still pieces of my fj on the 74 hwy along with a garage door opener.

Gotta love that area too. 74, stop at Anza at the Paradise Corner Cafe and then left to Idylwild or right to Palm Springs. Great roads and no bad choices. Year round riding, sea level to almost 9,000 feet, desert, ocean, wild life and great roads. Oh, laid back SoCal tudes. Real motorcycle culture here, lots of riders and great bikes. Too bad we have so many riders in accidents, AGATT or let darwinism do the work.

Please do not tell others, let then continue to think it is all smog and traffic and illegals and what ever else they imagine.

Steve was great guide. Opened a whole new area up for me. I had to drag out my map when I got home to figure out where hell I was all day. Was great to see Terry pull up at Palomar and join the fun. Hope to meet up with him again. Royal Crown and onion soup for dinner at the Gnome in Idylwilde... cool. After the ride down the hill at night and seeing how well Marks HID light worked... gotta get that.
Good times,
Mike

Mike, I am surprised you noticed!!! With your stock (show me my own elbows) mirrors I thought your were immune to my "Sunshine at night" effect (low beam the entire ride back). I forgot I was ridding in pitch black with my dark smoke visor while chasing Steve down the hill from Idylwilde. Saved my ass when Klavdy had his dismount a while back and did the ride back home in the twisties with a dark visor as well. Every car I approached pulled over to let me pass.

I am a little sore and beat up today from the ride, that means I don't ride enough....More rides!!!!

No that you mention it -- that HID light was so good it created a shadow of my bike in front of me even though I had my light on.   Night time and curves and me don't mix well but the HID was very bright.

Thanks Mike for the Crown and Onion soup --- I can honestly say I've never had that combo but it was definitely better than the Creme of Spinach choice.

I am ready to get together again ...just say when

I'm putting this mod pretty high on my list of things-to-do, just out of interest, how much increase in light out to the sides within 5 - 10m of the bike do you get over the standard headlight? My biggest issue is when dropping into a tight 35kph corner at night, I am turning inside the effective reach of my headlight, so I'm heading into a big dark scary hole...  I was just wondering if I would need to fix up some small spots pointing outwards as well, which is what i was initially going to do, or will the HID system fix that for me?

Cheers,

James

The HID I have from DDM fixes this some. On high beam even a little better. But the nature of a single beam and the geometry of turning a bike do not mix. Unless you get the new BMW. Kind of costly just to get this problem fixed. You will love the extra bright light of any HID upgrade. IMHO, try it first, then decide if you need additional lights to hit the twisties in the dark. If you chose HID, don't chose a color (or Kelvin) below 4500 or above 6000. The 4500 to 5000 range is close to the color of sun light. Our eyes as humans (for most of us) are tuned for this spectrum. Once you go over you start getting into the blue (above 5K) color might look cool but become less efficient. Function over form. I have the 4.5K on both my bike and my truck, the sun shines all the time when I am driving.

I had the same issues but after installing my HID driving lights i can effectively light up the entire road in the corners.

bonus is i can turn them off when riding in traffic so as to not piss anyone off.

I can picture having driving lights for corners as crossed directed for best effect. The light on the LH side is pointed high and to the Right for the other side. This way the high side of the bike is projecting the light where you need it facing the low side of the corner. Or you could just flood the front and blind any and all coming the other way. Use 55 Watt HIDs and burn some retinas like I love to do. Less bugs, watch them burn....

Here are the pics from Rick Clemson site -- links to us coming up the mountain....  I did not see one with Mike -- but Terry and Mark and I are covered.  Perhaps Rick thought they were all the same bike anyways -- hard to tell the Red and Whites apart.  Pictures can be bought from the site if you like.

Thanks FJMonkey and Racerman, good feedback, definately going for this mod sooner rather than later  :good2:

Sorry for hijacking your post -  :pardon: :flag_of_truce: (popcorn)

Looked like a good ride, my FJ was jealous. In a perfect world I'd love to throw the FJ in a crate and come across to the US for  a few months.. :good:

Im actually using 35 watt'ers in the driving lights i converted to HID.... they are plenty of light and i think i have actually seen the bugs turn into ash before hitting them

Some more shots guys -- video too..  Watch me smoke the Bmw RR --not  -- but truth be told I slowed up to see camera and who was taking the shots...

Note to view the video look for the file in the third row -- 4 in from the left -- you will see jpeg of the FJ's as well as the BMW RR in the same row -- the video is the .flv file -- click to play.  I also saw on the site that it is free for Thanksgiving.  check out the home page of the site for details.

Fun day for sure

it was -- keep your eyes posted to the Join me for a Ride section... it will always be posted there when we do an organize one.

Weekends thru Christmas will be busy but possibly a ride during a  weekday after Christmas but most definitely a weekend in January will plan a ride.
