Title: Long-time FJ wannabe w/ problem
Post by: Jklnhyde on November 20, 2011, 08:21:29 AM
I just got my hands on a sweet FJ12 that had been stored since 1999. The bike has less than 6K miles and had been set up as a showbike; fully powdercoated frame and all brackets, repainted plastics, chrome wheels, etc. It was tastefully done, so may keep it the way it looks. It also has a Corbin set and V&H SS2r system.
Anyway, $500 for a complete FJ is not too bad, but I am having an issue identifying the year of the bike. The title indicates its a 1992, but several clues point elsewhere. The rear shock has a horizontal adjusting wheel at the bottom of the piston; the sticker on the rear fender liner (underneath the seat) says the bike complies with 1986 emmision standards; no ABS; small headlight. The VIN is barely visible under the paint so I have to rely on the paprwork to be correct...
It's possible the bike was wrecked and reassembled with a mix of parts, which would explain why the entire bike was dissassembled and meticulously painted/coated.

Any ideas where else to look to figure this out?

Rick

Sure, just post pics and we will figure it out.  See how to post pics in the General Discussion pages.

Please take and post some detailed pictures.

It _COULD_ be an `87 hiding in a `92 frame...
     (sorry, inside joke)

This thread has a link towards the bottom that discusses VIN numbers and their "logic":

$500.00??? Yow! The powdercoating alone probably cost more than that!

What does the VIN on the title say?
