Title: Good luck team RPM
Post by: weymouth399 on November 09, 2011, 10:18:24 AM
It's only a couple days till our very own RPM Randy will wheel a racecar again. I would like to say good luck to him and his sons. A 1,2,3 would be a awesum finish. I would like to be there myself but 4000ish miles is a little far for me to go racing.  :shok:  Maybe next year.
Maybe a TEAM FJOwners.com sticker would look good on the top 3 cars.

Well, we got the 1st & 2nd. I am not totally sure yet, but I believe I lost a clutch basket and all forward motion in my car while running second between the boys. (I will have a photo of the problem tomorrow.)

A good weekend; My oldest to the World Finals race today with his younger brother finishing second but clinching the INEX national title for 2011.

My Legend Pro driver Frankie Marks, who just picked up his new RPM built 1200 two weeks ago set fast time,  and was leading his heat race when the axle housing failed yesterday, and returned today to run away from the field in the main event.

I believe he lead every lap of the main, I didn't get to see the first few laps as I was being towed in.

Also had great showing in the Legends Master division with RPM customers coming home 3rd through 6th behind two drivers from Finland was were really fast and their engines were confiscated for inspection.

Good times, Randy - RPM

Rocking the race Randy and family, Great job! With the exception of the clutch issue it must have been thrilling for you guys leading the pack.

The parts on the dirt are unintentional....Randy showed some pics of him off roadding during a race and talking about getting dirt everywhere in the car.

Okay here is the Team RPM weekend recap.

Friday starts off the weekend raining. Youngest son Ryan sets fast time, I am second and oldest son Robert is third. Ryan is 6 seconds faster than Robert & I and we are something like 8 seconds faster than the 4Th place car.

Heat race starts, Ryan jumps out the lead with me behind. I screw up on the start and hit the rev limiter so Robert gets dropped to fourth. Robert passes for third and the gap between the three of use stays the same until I run of track and loose 3rd to Robert. My car is pretty loose as I am running year old tires and the kids are on nice new rubber.

We ran the valves on Robert's car Friday night Ryan decided to do his Saturday morning, which he does. I notice when Ryan has the valve cover off that the gasket has pulled away from the cover and give him the example of the only race I lost in 2009 is when he did not install the valve cover gasket properly and it leaked.

Well, we head out for the main on a clear and sunny Saturday.  Ryan is on the pole, Robert second and I am third. I immediately notice Ryan's car smoking from the left side on the warm up lap, and so do Robert and Ryan.

We roll around and get the green flag. I push Ryan past Robert and we go into the first turn 1, 2, 3. As we go over the hill of turn two, a right hander, the smoke just billows out of the left side of Ryan's car. He takes turns 3A & 4 and decides the oil leak is bad enough to pulled over and hope he can just milk it along for the 1-2-3 finish we were hoping for.

I move to 1st with Robert right behind me and we head of into turn 7 and as I am 2/3 of the way through the corner, I get hit from behind and spun out. I go full throttle to do a 360 and continue. As I am spinning around the car is bogging down so I jam it down into second gear. I can see Robert is the car going behind me.

I spin it around and the Robert is now in 2nd and I am in third and Ryan is behind me as a full course caution comes out. It turns out that Robert got into the corner to hot, locked the front wheels and collected me causing me to spin.

We restart the race and I shove Robert by the leader before turn two and the guy he passes runs my off in the dirt exiting turn two, I gather the car and pass him in turn 3 and then run off the outside of turn 4 as the outside tires were muddy from when he force me off in two. He get back beside me as we enter the carousel and he is on the outside when he spins out.

Robert is now 20+ cars ahead of me and I set off to catch him. I get to approximately 8-10 car lengths back from him, but I notice the clutch is slipping and I start loosing ground. I can see Ryan is way back there running in third and he is 20+ seconds in front of 4Th place.

I go into survival mode to try and finish the race as the clutch is slipping worse at every acceleration point.

I fall into the clutches of Ryan who passes me and I am still hoping to keep the 1-2-3 but we are only half way through.

The lap after Ryan passes me as I crest the hill of turn 3A the car gets light and there is wheel spin. As the car unloads the engine goes instantly to the rev limiter and then it instantly locks up. I pull off the Nascar chute and roll down to turn 7 and watch the boys finish 1 & 2.

So in the end, Robert won the 2011 Thunder Roadster World Finals and Ryan won the 2011 INEX national point championship.

Needless to say Ryan is frustrated at the mistake putting on the valve cover gasket as the section just above the exhaust of cylinders 1&2 is hanging out causing the leak.

Here is the clutch basket parts I removed from behind the clutch cover.
And here is the shot of a piece that wedge between the crank and the case locking up the engine.

Not quite the result I was hoping for but, hey we all have to have dreams. We had a great weekend as Team RPM won two of the four World Finals events and the Roadster and Legends Pro divisions as well as clinched the INEX national points titles in the divisions as well.

When I get the photos from Victory lane I will pass them along.

Way to go Randy You were in position to do it, that's all you can really ask for.  :good: Do you think the spin had to do with the clutch problem or just bad luck. Are you gonna buy a third T/R now. :sarcastic:

Post by: racerrad8 on November 14, 2011, 01:06:50 PM
I do, when I was spinning I had to jam it down into second to complete the 360 and it probably broke then. I think that is why the clutch was slipping and then it finally failed.

Actually, my cars are going to moth balled for the next couple years as I am going to focus on business and growing what I planted this spring.

Pat, with your current record it begs to ask if you have already renewed your card. Either before or after your recent experiment in physics involving some sand/dirt. Before would add to cause and after would add to therapy. Regardless I am happy to know that you had all your gear and it did its job in keeping you as free from harm as possible. I would be just as freaked out when applauded after having my gear cut away and the nurses and doctors found you sans dirt and sand road rash....WTF?? That is why I wear it cuz that is what it is supposed to do!!! ATGATT.

Well, the 2011 Championship points have finally been totaled and we could not have planned it any closer. If I would have finished in 2nd where was running the World Finals, would have a different outlook. The top four cars in the Thunder Rodaster final results are all RPM customers.

2011 Thunder Roadster Final Championship Points (http://www.uslegendcars.com/handler.cfm/template,points/cat_id,42511?class=11)

As also mentioned prior Frankie Marks was able to take the clean sweep of the 2011 Pro division winning the Championship and World Finals

Congratulations are also in order Kirk Hall and Phil Joy for their 3rd & 5th place finishes in the 2011 Master Division.

You can see all of the results listed under "road course" tab in the point section as www.600racing.com (http://www.600racing.com)

Thanks again to everyone here as well for making 2011 a great year.

Another RPM assisted customer has signed to drive for JR Motorsports in 2013.

Our very own Bob Weymouth has taken his young driver, Reid Lanpher, with the assistance of RPM set-up & parts, allowing him to become the youngest winner in the highly competitive NELCAR road race series earlier this year; Lanpher Becomes Youngest NELCAR Winner (http://www.nhms.com/media/headlines/uslci/lanpher-becomes-youngest-nelcar-winner.html)

The success of Reid Lanpher in the 2012 season has led to the signing to drive for Dale Earnhardt Jr's, JR Motorsport racing team for 2013;

And a big thank you on all your help, PRICELESS.

Thanks Doug

I went looking for you sun night couldn't find you, again mon when we got back from our ride. She did gave me the ok to build a track bike for Travis and I, after seeing the guy riding double in front of all the others solo riders behind him. :shok:

Bump drafting on that straight will give you almost a 1/2 second advantage. To bad the bikes can only draft.

The 56 that he was pushing was the first kid I helped out a couple years ago, he was the 2011 nelcar champion.

Well,

I was scheduled to head down Las Vegas to work on two of my customer Legends cars at the 2012 World Finals. My wife tells me since we are going down why not take our car...

So, Wednesday night I pulled the carbs to clean, aired up the tires since it was last driven by my son last June. Pushed it into the trailer and headed out early Thursday.

Got to the track on Friday morning and helped out my two guys, Phil Joy & Kirk Hall were 1 & 2 in the INEX Masters National points standings with this race being the deciding factor. I decided to skip practice and just run the qualifying session. I jump in the car and head out and complete 2.5 laps before breaking an intake cam. I had not even got the tires to temp but was still able to post the second fast qualifying time.

Since I was broken I spent the rest of the day tuning on Phil & Kirk's cars for their qualifying & heat races. Kirk qualified second fastest and Phil 12th. After the heats were complete and the points tallied for the main event starting spots, Kirk was starting second and Phil 10th. I went ahead and took my car to the hotel and lucked out as when the cam broke it did not bend any valves. Dropped in the new cam and got my car ready for my main event on Saturday.

Well, since I qualified 2nd but did not have any heat race points I had to start at the rear of the pack. I was able to take the lead of the race before the completion of the 5th lap of 11. I noticed a little oil building on the windshield and thought one of my fellow competitors was leaking oil as I was passing them. As I continued to extend my lead I notice the oil on my windshield was getting worse and it is now flowing over the firewall into the driver compartment...

As the race progresses I take the white flag and have a pretty good lead and the oil has now fully covered the windshield and I am having to look out the side for the corner curbing and I have slowed significantly as I really cannot see where I am going. As I am coming up to the final turn before the run down the main straight and finish, I feel the engine tie up and then...

BOOM & there is now flames in the driver compartment with me.

I shut the ignition off and push in the clutch as the engine has kicked a rod out the side of the block and the oil hit the header and a flash fire occurred. The fire went right out and I was less that a 1/4 mile from the finish, but no power remaining only coasting. I am passed by the two cars behind me before I can coast to the starting line finishing third...DAMN.

So, long story short...The valve cover bolt pulled the threads and was the source of the leak which allowed enough oil out of the engine to starve the system resulting in the catastrophic failure.

Kirk & Phil start their race and Kirk needs to beat Phil by more than three spots to overtake Phil in the national points championship. The race went well with Kirk running in the top five in a great race. Phil worked his way up to 10th after getting bumped from the course on the first lap and falling well back into the field. Another racer blows an engine car catches fire and the red flag comes out bunching the field up for a two lap shootout. Kirk is in 4th and Phil in 11th. At the start Phil gets a break as cars in front of him are beating & banging resulting in a spin at the first corner and he is able to get up to 7th while Kirk is now racing for 2nd. As they go down the back straight Kirk suddenly slows and before they get to the next corner Phil passes Kirk. Kirk continues around the track much slower than race speed. The race finishes with Phil coming in 6th and Kirk falling to 17th.

When Kirk comes into the pits it is all high fives for the Phil Joy bunch and disgust from Kirk's camp. I was able to check with Kirk as he pulled of the track and he showed my the shift lever in the car was just flopping loosely. I look at the engine where the shifter attaches and the weld failed and the car was in fourth gear and he was unable to shift and keep the race pace.

In the end, Phil wins the 2012 INEX Masters National Championship and Kirk takes second, I ran one race this year and lead the majority of the race before popping the motor and falling to third.

Not a bad weekend, but we all had higher hopes, but parts failures are part of the game.

RPM customers were able to secure two national points titles for 2012.

Phil Joy in Masters
Tom Boyd in Thunder Roadsters

Here is the article that ran in the hometown of RPM customer Phil Joy following his INEX Masters championship season.

http://beniciaherald.me/2012/12/14/benician-crowned-world-champion/ (http://beniciaherald.me/2012/12/14/benician-crowned-world-champion/)

Of the four division of the INEX series of top ten drivers, RPM customers were able to secure 16 of those forty division or just over a 40% success rate for 2012.

We are having fun and winning and the 2013 season starts January 4th.
