Title: Just bought my first FJ and I'm pumped!!
Post by: scharding on November 03, 2011, 12:48:58 PM
I live in Ontario, Canada just outside Toronto and I just bought an '87 FJ1200 with only 31,000 kms on it (that's 19,375 mi for our good neighbors to the south) for $800!! It has been in heated storage for the last 10 years. It needs the usual gas tank replacement and fluids changed, but other than that she's in good shape!  Can't wait to get her running!

I'm sure I'll be back with lots of questions! Any one have a spare gas tank???

Howdy neighbor :hi:...awesome deal on the 87 for sure. Finding a low mileage bike like that is rare. Was this on Kijiji? You are gonna luv that bike.
I am up in Barrie, so not far from you. There are a few of us here from southern Ontario.

The red and whites are for sure the best looking  year...

Cheers...Jake

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome! I can't wait to get out and ride in the srpring!

So here come the questions......the bike has been in heated storage for 10 years, it's in good shape but real dusty. Should I just wipe it down the best I can with a wet towel or can it be hosed down with a garden hose on low pressure??

I came up from a Honda 750 Nighthawk "S" which is shaft drive.......this chain thing will be new to me as far as maintenance goes so any help will be well received!!

Thanks again!!

Steve

Welcome to the group!  Hopefully you can connect with some of us other SE Ontario riders next spring.  Who knows maybe the canadians will take over the NE FJ Rally next year!

Low pressure garden hose is okay, just never direct any water stream toward places that have seals, o-rings, etc. (steering head, wheel hubs, swingarm/shock linkage, chain) or any place else you don't want water to get in (instruments, switches, under seat, etc).

Good idea to follow up with a bit of lube to lever pivots, chain, etc. afterwards.

Garden hose....  Wiping the dust off will scratch the paint.

Depends on how anal you are about it.

I'd hose it off, then wash it normally, and if it's scratched (which wouldn't be a shocker!), hit it with a clay bar and some time with a polishing wheel.  Finishing with a decent wax, of course.

Meh, I lie.  I'd park it outside and let it get rained on, close enough to a wash. :)

I find that if I leave it in te rain it gets dirtier than before..which is really annoying when it rains the afternoon after I finish scrubbing her down..

Havent used wax though and never used a hose, too afraid I'll spray the wrong thing...

Also make sure u have something to cover the gas cap so no rain gets in the tank(not that it should anyway)

Oh and welcome to the group :good2:

I wash the crap out both of mine, hose, power washer, good car shampoo/wax, sometimes pinkstuff to get the nasty off (real carefully though). I do the same with my dirt bikes and store them bathed in wd 40.

I havn't waxed it yet but that's this winters project. (after the ice bikes and racecars) Hope it gets done. :shok: Not much that can't get wet, they do run in the rain.

I am thinking that Pat was less than pleased with all the ineffective polishing products on the market, so he invented one to meet his standards. The rest is a shiny history that that blinds you when the sun hits it.

Ok, so I pick up my $800 bargain on Saturday morning and can't wait to get it back to the heated shop where it's being stored for the winter and start to work on it. Unfortunately, all I have time for is to drop it off and head to work (I hate people who quit with NO notice).

So this morning I head over to the shop to start cleaning the 10 years worth of dust and crud on it, so as I'm cleaning it I figure it would be good to get right under the seat. Well I tried to figure out how the seat comes off, for an HOUR!! Finally I lean against the work bench just laughing my ass off because no I have to go home, go on the internet and figure out how to do it!!  :dash2:

It MUST be a newbie thing, because my Honda was real easy.

Oh well, I still have 4 months until riding season!!

Steve.......RH side beneath the passenger grab handle is a helmet lock.......its also the seat lock.
Turn the key one way and the helmet lock drop open, turn it the other way and the seat unlocks.
Now, also beneath the grab handles, there are 2 latches - one either side..... flip them down and the seat unlatches (pops up a wee bit). slide the seat rearward a 1/2 inch or so and it disengages at the front.

+1 on that, if the PO had not shown me how, I reckon it would have taken me quite a while to work it out, with associated cursing and swearing :)

At least now I can go back to the shop and do some tinkering because I'll be able to get the seat off!!  I think I'll have a good chuckle over this for some time to come.

Thanks again for the help!

Cheers,

Steve

Ok.......after much time and parts replacement, she's finally on the road!!!

She has new tires, gas tank, rebuilt carbs, calipers and clutch slave, and a bath!! She runs great, fast and smooth. With less than 31,000 kms on it, i will be riding her for a long time to come!!

Kudos laddie. I hope you have many, many happy miles together.
Just a small pointer based on experience: If you want your helmet to have some nasty dings and scars, keep putting it on the seat.

Great looking bike. Welcome to the group Steve.  If your heading through Simcoe give me a heads up...I'll meet you at Timmy's or something and have a good look at your FJ!  Just got my well-abused and dust covered '86 on the road...what a rush to hear it finaly running again.  I often run her up to Cambridge to pick my wife up from work on those too-nice-to-drive kind of days.

Ya the helmet on the seat was for the pic only! it took me 2 or 3 minutes to take my hands away from it to take the shot!!

"dbelch" I'll give you a pm a day or 2 before if I am going for sure and we can meet at Timmies for sure!!

The chain has been well lubed and it's starting to look better the more I ride.
