Title: Aftermarket belly scoop
Post by: 1tinindian on October 28, 2011, 09:54:57 AM
I bought this off of ebay along time ago and started to modify it, as it would NOT even bolt on in the delivered condition.
It had WAY too much material on it, so I took a paper cutout traced off an OE scoop, using the top edge, the front edge and bolt hole as alignment points and transferred that to the fiberglass scoop.
I marked it with a sharpie and began to cut and trim until I had enough clearance around everything.
Besides cutting off the areas shown,  I also had to open up the area around the header pipes, as  the scoop was touching the pipes.
I also had to make the cutout on each side for the frame bolt.
At first, I really didn't like the way it was going, but the thing IS nice and sturdy!

I had it sitting around for over a year before I painted it, and I decided I would like to have it on for the fall rally, so the week before I left, I painted it and put the decals on.
I buried the "YAMAHA" decals in 6 coats of clear.
The color is a tri-coat pearl white that matches the OE Yamaha color very well.

After it was all said and done, I would do another one if the need would arise, as I'm very happy with the way it turned out, even though it isn't "exactly" like the Yamaha part.
