Title: updating an FJ?
Post by: loudwhat? on October 19, 2011, 03:40:37 PM
i have a 85 FJ1100 and i was thinking of updating the fairings on it to like a R1 or something of the likes. i was wondering if anyone has done this and what is the closest, best match up out there as i dont want months of mods to make it work.

also on a side note i need to add fluid to my front shocks, what is the best way to do that?

Don't know about the fairing......  Are the forks leaking?  If so, they should be pulled and taken apart, seals and bushings replaced and new fluid added.  Otherwise, you can pull the fork caps and add as necessary.  The best way is to remove the springs and fully compress the forks, and measure the level. Best results are with the level around 130mm from the top of the tube.

Good luck.

If you really wanna update your FJ to an R1 you could do what this guy did.. and just shape the fairing differently. Its really nifty but a bit over the top, expect to put a lot of time into it

FJ1200 R1 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NXi9E2KoBcM#ws)

Different colour would do nicely. Look on youtube for other examples there are quite a few

You could also speak to member Sideburns, this is what he did with his FJ

Best to do Is find a fairing slightly bigger or design one and take it to someone who can forge it. I say bigger because its easier to cut away than add on. Besides it isnt that hard to add mounting brackets, simple welding(just dont weaken the frame.

It is expensive though so if you have the cash then go for it :good2:

The rule is, put in the time and effort and expect to be happy. DO it rushed and not taking care and expect to be disappointed

Just go ahead and buy the fairing you like. Nothing is going to fit anyway, so all the work you do is best spent on something you like.
You can buy pretty nice imitation fairing for race use.

It,s never going to fit the frame exactly, because it'll to be designed for a different frame, not your frame.
I have a Honda CBR tank (modified) which has a large...err.....coolling opening between the frame and the tank.....

Good luck!

.......  I know what I say, on this FJ web site, does not matter. But,

To be honest, until watching the video. I did not think there was another person on this plant, that has done more work to their FJ, then I

that is impressive !!

It doesnt matter how the lady is dressed(the FJ) or even if she is undressed. The engines are really popular and thats what makes them sort after. As sideburns mentioned, the CBR fairings are a good place to start, very big too, if you want something a little older then a Honda RC fairing could do as well, whatever you do just get in there an do it :wacko2:

I'm really thinking about redoing mine.
You can come pick up this fairing in the Netherlands.

We usually do bussines with the currency called "beer"
Some nice Belgium Triple will get you a long way...      :drinks:

name the account to transfer the funds into and I'll take that body work off of you :wacko1: LOL I wish, but you really do have one of the best looking FJ mods I have seen around, really great sporty look. I unfortunately dont have the time skill or funds to such a project at current

My mother-in-law looks good on pictures too (or so I'm told)
Up close it's a different story.....    :wacko2:

But hey it's not how they look, but how they ride...
I'm NOT talking about my M-I-L

I'm really thinking about slamming the bike, using modified 1100 fairing.
It's gonna be low and good in a straight line.

Mister sideburns, I have to ask.... why?

You've got a damned sexy FJ with that plastic wrapped on it.  If you slam it and go the whole nine yards, it's still going to be a middle of the pack, slow as fuck machine compared to anything made this century.  With the plastic and stance it currently has, it's really pretty badass/evil looking.  Stick with that, eh?  Sure, a side exhaust, cut pan, and some suspension tweaking could put it in the weeds, but it's not going to go all that terribly fast compared to nearly anything modern unless you start burning nitromethane.

One more example for you loudwhat, somebody who used a R1 or some other sorts fairing, maybe kawa

http://www.fjowners.com/index.php?topic=2915.0 (http://www.fjowners.com/index.php?topic=2915.0)

It has a horrible paint job I say but just proves you can do anything

.......fjt, what is so horrible about it??   a lot of people that has seen it up close, [and not by the way of a thro -a-way camera], would disagree with you !!
and you should have said,..... a select few, can to do anything!! .......... and did you mean when you say, kawa?

@ Jeff, by kawa I meant a kawasaki ZX 10 fairing(theres a new very slim pointy one like the FJ on the pic has)

The paint job may actually be very good and the camera may just not do it justice, so sorry if I offended you in anyway. Personal preferrence as I like red myself, but in the picture its too flashy... Its a good job of a mod no doubt about it, but the colour doesnt do it for me :flag_of_truce:

....... My mistake, I am guilty of trying to read peoples minds, when not talking to them, face to face.

About the paint job, I am a big time Ford and Yamaha fan and owner. and I have a 02 red Ford Lightning,  that I am very proud of, and that is where that red came from.
But, I did feel that it was a... plan Jane.... and it needed something more, stripes or decals. so, now it is blue with white stripes.

       fj11.5.......... thanks.
