I had to replace my valve cover gasket and grommets recently and figured I'd check valve clearance while I was at it. No problem. However, getting the carbs properly synchronized eluded me for some time. I had the tools but lacked the finer points of carb adjustment. A check of the spark plugs revealed number three cylinder was running a bit lean.
A search of the form topics on this yielded pay dirt. I was able to properly get the carbs synchronized and now she's running better than she has in a long time. Now I have engine breaking when I roll off the throttle and she idles just fine. No more popping coming from the exhaust either. Thanks to all who contributed.
Happy camper!
