Time to exchange my poor battery which is hanging on by the skin of its teeth.
Phoned the local Yamaha dealership, asked them about ordering a AGM-battery but was told that this was not a recommended battery type for my particular bike. Anybody knows the reason for this, could it be a heating issue?
Also looking into heavy-duty batteries because of the cold and shifting climates I'm in. Anybody out there having the same thoughts?
Because the dealer doesn't want responsibility. Also, they want to sell you three batteries rather than just a single AGM.
Your dealer probably told you that because it wasn't in his parts listing and he couldn't make the same margin on an AGM battery.
I know a guy living in the outskirts of Detroit that didn't put the battery from his "toy" (aka Toyota MR2) on a tender all winter fully expecting it to be dead by spring. It was, so he'd take it back to Walmart and get a new one under warranty. Did this for 4 or 5 years.

About 5 years ago, I put an AGM battery from Batteries Plus in my '85. Replaced it on Saturday. That's twice as long as any other battery has lasted in that bike.

Thanks for the advice guys, I'll go for the AGM battery, found one at half the price of the dealers unsealed battery, seems like a decent deal...
Once again, thanks.

Simi_Ed put a Lithium Ion battery in his bike, more cranking amps and the battery was smaller than stock...Says his hot starting problem went away as well. Not cheap in price but Li is the strongest and most modern battery. Might be worth a try...
Ed, Mark,
Where did the Lith battery come from?

I'm not so sure about the hot start thing being fixed. I had another bout of that when I killed the engine at a light and had to restart. I did the typical 1/4 throttle crank thing to get back on the move. The battery is still 8 pounds lighter and about 1/2 to 2/3 the size of the wet cell battery. It is also 100% maintenance free. The typical life is supposed to be around 10 years too.
If you can spare the extra cash ... it still seems like a good investment.
Hi all, in the market for new ergs. Has anyone had experience with the AGM in a hot climate, ie 40C+ ? What model should I target?
Cheers, Dazza

Weather here runs from there to way below zero on either scale.
I like the AGMs, though by the time mine wears out there may be something better available, maybe already. Ed mentions it in the thread linked below.
IME, they last several years, with minimal care.
Last one I had was a WestCo, new one is a 'Big Crank' made by East Penn.

ive looked into a few types of 12v 14mah fj type batteries, seems in aus a gel type battery are slightly smaller but more efficient at cold crank, and hold a charge better, for about the same price as a lead acid battery, lithium would be great, but for my use these days too expensive to warrant buying one (popcorn) (popcorn)

I live in Tucson, AZ, typical summer temp is 102F to 110F, about 40C +..... and the AGM works great, lives long. The 1st one I had lasted about 6 years, the current one is a couple years old and I epect a similar lifetime out of it.
wow, those sort of temps battery life even unused should improve the life of them ,as down here the cold takes its toll, even using a trickle charger, and about the hottest we see is about very low 30c and that dousnt happen often in summer :dance2:

Yep, Tucson typically has lows of ~28F (overnight) in winter, to 110F highs in the summer. 90+F starts in May and goes til November... we saw a cold spell last year that hit 17F, hottest we've seen was 117F a few years ago. Phoenix sees 120+F in summer....

I was in Phoenix during the last record breaking temp. I was working in the parking lot of a resort about 5 miles from the airport. The report on the security radio said that all departures have been suspended due to runway temps (in the shade) measuring at 122F. Commercial aircraft not being rated beyond 120F get grounded since the runway distance requirement is off the charts. FYI, it was just a hot day to me... But it is a DRY heat.... Very different than a 90/90 heat.
dont think ill be moving over that way anytime soon :rofl2: too warm for this little black duck :sarcastic:

Yea, well, so is my oven....... :bye2:
Speaking of batteries, I will have AGM batteries on the shelf today. Once I get them in hand I will add them to my inventory.
I also added a battery maintenance charger for winter storage. Unlike most of the common brand of these chargers which just supply a constant mA charging voltage, this one modulates the charge rate. It safely maintains Wet, Gel, MF and AGM batteries, plus it will also work on 6 volts systems as well.

I've had my battery on a maintenance charge for over a week now, after it went flat over our winter recently. (yes, we have winter in Queensland ). If this battery doesn't hold charge, instead of spending around $160.00 on another Yuasa, I might get one of these AGM beauties, http://www.allpurposebatteries.com.au/product_info.php?products_id=48 (http://www.allpurposebatteries.com.au/product_info.php?products_id=48) and they have 250 cold crank amps compared to the Yuasa 200 CCA.

Winter? in Queensland? I didnt notice it! :blum1:
However I find Qld winter the best time to get out and ride... nice sunny days and the FJ doesnt run too hot either
Compared to our summers which are turning into monsoon seasons!
As for batteries - I have and use a smart charger called OptiMate and reckon it is brilliant. It has saved my battery and keeps it running better than ever. Its abotu the same price as a battery and has saved m replacing a few!
I got it from Steve at Moto Tech Diagnostics (local QLD fellow) good fellow as well!
