Title: Essential carb adjusting/rebuilding tools?
Post by: coreyoreo on September 21, 2011, 11:24:19 PM
Hi all..

I want to learn to rebuild my own carbs but need to know what basic tools I should have on hand before I begin.

There are so many different kinds & I don't wanna waste my money on tools I don't need.

I don't need the most expensive..  just ones that work.

I would truly appreciate any ideas!!

Corey

Good cabinet-style screwdrivers that fit the jets are most important, otherwise it's easy to bugger the screw slots in them. Cabinet-style drivers are round, and the same diameter all the way to the tip... no taper, so they fit the hole the jets are down inside of. Usually hollow-ground, as well. The screws on the outside, holding the diaphram covers, float bowls and other parts/pieces on are JIS (Japanese Industrial Standard) and good JIS drivers are also handy.... but most of us have replaced those screws with allen-head bolts.

Great, Thanks Rich.

Cabinet screwdrivers on the list this weekend!!

Thanks again for the tip!

Synch tool, preferrably a Morgan Carbtune.

Big box of jets to swap around. :)

I just took a screwdriver to a grinder and made something exactly like Rich describes.  Works nice.  After replacing all the stupid JIS screws with stainless socket heads, a set of long allen t-handles is handy.

A good light, a set of reading glasses (even if you're young, they're helpful!), and an egg carton to keep stuff straight.

Thanks Andy, all good stuff.

A big box of jets is interesting... any idea where I could get something like that? Randy, maybe?

I did already purchase the socket heads. SO much better...

Medium-sized needle nosed Vise Grips.

I had to use those to crack loose about 4 bowl screws I physically could not loosen with only the screwdriver. I'm sure they have not been removed since 1988. Just grab the sides of the screw and pop it loose.

Don't forget new bowl gaskets.

Got it, thanks, Lotsokids! Great idea on the vise-grips.

Anything more, please feel free to add.

Essential tools

- An automatic centre punch to extract the float bowl pins
- A long screwdriver to sync the carbs
- PlastiDip to repair any minimum damage or pin at the slide diaphrams
- Morgan vacuum gauge
