Title: recently restored 85 now bogging?
Post by: Kennyg on September 20, 2011, 06:50:49 PM
Hello all....After sitting 10 YEARS cleaned the carbs and replaced some leaky seals and put 1000 + kms on  the bike but it has been losing oil somewhere.Just the other day it started bogging and stalled out.I managed to get it going again but it sounds off when reving down?gargling sound? I dont believe it is fuel supply.I  need to address second gear fix and was wondering a good place to start looking for oil loss? Is it better to rebuild all or just do rings or ?? Thanks in advance for any input.

When you cleaned the carbs, did you also clean and seal the tank thoroughly?  You may be getting rust from the tank or bits from the fuel lines blocking one or more of the carbs.
What is/are the spark strength like?  Are the coils starting to fail?  Battery ??

If you're going to tear it down for 2nd gear and rings, you may as well address all the wear items.  Otherwise you'll have to tear it all down in the future.  Your choice - how much do you enjoy taking it all apart? (or paying someone else for this?)

The most likely place for oil to be going is past the cam cover bolt grommets and gasket.... they see a lot of heat and dries out.

Thanks and yes the tank was treated with KREEM and a secondary inline fuel filter was added....could poor battery cause shutdown while riding?? And if this leak is the cam cover bolt grommets....what is the suggested fix for that?

Kreem is KRAP.  If it's not already the problem, it soon will be.

The inline filter may also be a problem.  Fuel line routing is critical and an inline filter usually causes fuel lime crimping which starves the bike for fuel.

Do you think it's burning oil or leaking it?

Has to be burning...no sign of any leaking?
