Just picked this '87 up last night. It'll keep my '85 that I picked up in March, company in the garage.

What a bute! Thank you for adding another 86/87 to the fold. That seat looks just like mine but with less stress. Take good care of her mate, strong and bullet proof. Loves the Koookaloooo.

Good on ya....To hell with the shims....What's going on with that license plate bracket? Did that come from a Erector set? (remember those?)

I'm still in the final stages on the assembly of my '85. It looks like I won't even get to taking the front forks apart on it this season, or get to the front brakes to remove those damns shims either :wacko2: I just want to at least hear it run before the snow flies here next month. Therefore, the '87 with a little prepping for storage, will have to sit till I can get to it next year.
I'd like to possibly get the '87 back to stock condition (minus brake shims :wacko3: ) at some point, so if anyone knows where I can snag an exhaust system, airbox with all the parts (PO went with pods), and ignition system (PO put on a Dyna 2000 on it), I'm assuming there's probably a jet kit in it as well. It did come with the old OEM seat.
Being a little age visible here, I actually did have an Erector set when I was a kid. In fact, I still have the little screwdriver for it in my toolbox!

Why do you want to put a stock ignition back on? The Dyna (with coils) is a significant upgrade. You wanna swap the Dyna setup for the stock components off of my '85?
I kept my '85 bone stock for eons. I used to think stock was more desireable, until I upgraded the front wheel on my '85. That was such a transformation that outher "useful" mods followed. These include '89 forks with monobloc calipers and straight rate springs, Penske, SS brake lines, engine bars. All of these make the bike a much better motorcycle without taking anything away from its classic look.
Both of my FJs have improved suspension, brakes, carb kits, Dyna ignition systems, and other subtle mods that improve the function without negatively affecting the FJ form.
And both bikes even have a full compliment of brake shims! :-)

I've got one of those mirrors on my left bar end just for seeing directly behind me. Drilled and tapped an 8mm hole in the 10mm hex hole on the bar end to mount it. Left the OEM mirrors on to see farther to the sides. It works real well, except for getting a little fuzzy at certain rpms. Bought a pair of them at Vintage Motorcycle Days a few years ago for $20 from a dude selling stuff from his deceased dad's bmw shop. I believe they sell now for about $45 each. I'd actually like to put one on the right bar, too, but foolish me gave the other one to my brother to put on his R11S for the same reason. Shoulda bought two sets. :dash2:

Based upon feedback, I'm going to reconsider going back to stock. Since I bought the '87 (and '85) not running, I have yet to hear the V&H exhaust's note.
I think the bar-end mirrors look good on it, but I have yet to ride the bike to find out how well I can see behind me. One thing that I did note about them when moving it around is, that it is hard to get a hand underneath of them to operate the brake and clutch levers, and that's without gloves on.

Rotate the mirrors 180 degrees so the wide end is at the bar end.

You can also loosen the socket head screw at the base of the stalk and move the stalk into a more upright position.
