dash lighting
Option 1: dash lighting

Option 2: dash lighting bulbs

I have found that my dash board lighting seems to be a bit week. I am not sure if it is the bulbs age or whether if one or 2 of them are burnt out. How many bulbs should there be lighting the dash? and any suggestions on lighting it up better?

Replace them all with LED, except the fuel warning one. Some of the tiny bulbs have likely burnt out, or you have been a welder with improper eye protection for many years. The fuel warning light needs to remain incandescent or it will be fully lit 100% of the time. Pull the upper fairing and then pull the dash out. I waited till I needed the fairing off for other reasons (new speedo) and fixed the lights at the same time.
I wonder if it'd be possible to use something like a zener diode on the fuel light with an LED? I hate the slowly brightening effect, but I don't know enough to alter it to be a binary (on or off) sort of thing.

Do you know what the breakover voltage would need to be?
Not really. Would have to decide where the minimum brightness of the analog bulb is (when it should come on) and measure, I think.

three questions........how many bulbs are there.....what size are they.......and where is the best place to buy them?
9, Counting the indicator lights. They are regular 194 push in style

any automotive supply store should have them
hey Trav......thx brother..... :good2:.....9 lights ? in the dash????? amazing...that would explain why my dash is a wee bit week.....I am guessing here....but around the tach and speedo......I think 2 are working....that would explain alot.......ok....off to the automotive store :bye2:...thx trav........

That was including indicator lights, blinkers, fuel etc...... I would think you would want to change them all, because another one is probably on its way.

I'd be interested in seeing what a multimeter would say when the tank has just enough fuel to start teasing the light. Then compare it to when the tank is full(er)
Once you have those numbers you just need to know what the min and max volts are for your bulb and solder in a resister. As I type this out it seems like quite a bit of work compared to before i started typing

Make sure you get the 194 LL (Long Life) bulbs.
Check this site out;

I've replaced every bulb on my bike with LEDs and a HID for the head light. Between all of them I've probably picked up 30 to 40 watts easy.
Change your brake lights and turns while you're at it.

There are a enormous leads variety. Please, which ones are the indicated to fit into the dashboard?
Thanks
Best regards

The only bulbs that I have found that last are the OEM Stanly bulbs P# 4G1-84744-00-XX. These bulbs have an extra filament support and are vibration resistant. Automotive 194LL will not last in an FJ. All of the LED 194 bulbs I've tried die quickly too.

This may well be the case in the early models but I wouldn't be put off fitting LED's to a rubber engine mount model (if the mounts have been done). There's no vibration. I haven't replaced a bulb in 50k and I doubt they were new when I bought it.

I did a complete change of all 9 bulbs with Sylvania LL bulbs years ago and have not had one fail. Knock on wood.
I tried find out, how long can be LED bulb for dash light.
I found on eBay those: http://www.ebay.ie/itm/10pcs-T10-Red-9-SMD-LED-168-194-W5W-Wedge-Light-Lamp-12V-for-Car-Light-/121789364112?hash=item1c5b363790:g:nCEAAOSw14xWIO83 (http://www.ebay.ie/itm/10pcs-T10-Red-9-SMD-LED-168-194-W5W-Wedge-Light-Lamp-12V-for-Car-Light-/121789364112?hash=item1c5b363790:g:nCEAAOSw14xWIO83)
they are 36 mm long. Will it fit?
And second question: should I look for any specific LED number (like 5050)?
I just measured the LEDs I used, just a tad over 28MM, 36MM might be too long. The bulbs in your link have little information about how bright they are. The stock bulb gives about 50 Lumens of light, my LEDs are about 100 and seem bright without being too bright. I also chose white light, other colors will not seem as bright even at the same Lumens.
I newer expected that can be so many different versions of this same bulb...... :wacko3:
This one is shorter (30mm) and if believe in seller word, it has 500 lumens: http://www.ebay.ie/itm/ERROR-FREE-CANBUS-T10-501-W5W-10-LED-5630-SMD-CREE-sidelight-bulbsXenon-White-L6-/181805279583?hash=item2a5470695f:g:z9oAAOSwv-NWT9RV (http://www.ebay.ie/itm/ERROR-FREE-CANBUS-T10-501-W5W-10-LED-5630-SMD-CREE-sidelight-bulbsXenon-White-L6-/181805279583?hash=item2a5470695f:g:z9oAAOSwv-NWT9RV)
500lm, that is equivalent to a 40W incandescent bulb. I don't know how they get that much light out of a T10 socket LED.
Time for a CanDman number for the dashboard .............2 more months and paradise will be a few pulls of the throttle away :yahoo:

These are the ones I bought. One factor was they aren't any larger than the stock bulb. I don't know what they lumens rating is, but I am very happy with the brightness level.

I have purchased some of these in amber and blue. A couple of weeks from now I will know more. They are 65 lumin in amber and 21 lumin in blue. There are so many sellers and so little information. The original bulb is supposed to be 28mm tall and is rated at 25 lumin.

There was a thread about this not that long ago. My gallery has some comparison pics if that will help, under My Mods and Maintenance.
Those are two years old now so the output of today's individual elements used to make 194 LED units is probably higher. One thing I did notice was that when the output is high, the colors of the indicators start to get washed out. Recognizing what the "information" is at a quick glance by the color is something I like to have so blasting them out to almost white with high power LEDs is not what I want. On the plus side, when they are brighter, I pick up the "information" with peripheral vision much easier; keep my eyes on the road.
You can see the amber lens is already much brighter, like a light yellow. The high beam blue is still pretty good and now it's vivid enough that on sunny days I notice if I left the high beams on by mistake. Before I had to give the indicator a good look to confirm.
The speedometer looked good with the blue lights but the tach and fuel gauge were not bright enough. The amber is too bright on the odometer but good on everything else. The needles stand out on all three. The high beam lamp is easy to identify when it is on and the neutral light is much easier to see with peripheral vision when downshifting. The bulbs that I removed were Stanley 158's which I believe are originals. Now if I can get the white paint off that Suzuki 5.5" rim.
