Title: throttle cables sort of sticking....
Post by: irishluck on August 25, 2011, 10:44:15 AM
So been awhile since I've been on here.

Working on my bike the other day ( 87 fj1200) and when I put the carbs back onto it, i hooked the throttle cables back up. both of them are connected been when I turn the throttle it kinda just gets stick there, like the other cable doesn't do its job and return the throttle back.

Any ideas? I haven't got a chance to sync my carbs back up and I'm thinking that might be why, maybe the springs or something arent strong enough to force it back down. I'm not quite sure...

They could need lubricating or they could be starting to fray.
Take them off and have a good spray with lube, and i'd go as far as taking the junction box apart, that box halfway down where the 2 sets of cables join, and checking inside and lubing with silicone grease or copperslip or something.

I did lube them up but didn't take the junction box apart and do it in there, that will be my next step. It just started to do this after I put the carbs back on after I rebuilt them again.

ill lube the box up and see what happens, no frays on the cable.

1) Are the cables routed properly?

2) Did they always stick, or is this a new symptom?

3) If this is a new symptom, what did you change between the time the throttle worked.... and now?

And irish, you say you've done something to the carbs.
Did you take them completely apart, and not put enough tension back in the springs that control the butterfly valves?

Well see that's exactly what I think it is, I thought I had mentioned something up above about that but maybe not. I had completely disassembled the carbs, each one was apart. i was thinking i didn't tighten something tight enough or something. I also haven't had a chance to sync them back up yet. would syncing them have anything to do with it?

No. And you really won't be able to sync the carbs properly until you can get the throttle cables snapping shut as they should. You can get the carbs close to balanced on the bench but they won't be perfect.

Nick, listen up: Don't fuck around with *anything else* until you fix this problem. Do not even think of riding your bike with a throttle that sticks.
First things First: Fix what you broke ... then worry about sync'ing the carbs...

and that's mainly just tightening the screws between the carbs to balance them correct?

Oh don't worry about me riding it, i haven't got to ride it yet. I'm still working on it.

see this wasn't happening before until i actually tore all 4 carbs apart to clean them. when i put the carbs back on is when it was "sticking". so ill try to balance those out and see what happens

Why do you think that balancing your carbs throttle plates, has something to do with your carbs sticking?

i was thinking thats what you guys meant but went back and read what you all posted and its not.

So then what else could it be  cause it wasnt doing this before i tore the carbs apart.....

Mate, unhook both cables from the carb bank and see if they are binding or not.
Just isolate the problem. If the cables are free moving, then you know its a problem in the carb bank....like maybe a spring is not seated properly or something.
Not rocket science here.

Cheers
Harvy

The problem could also be that the cable is bent in the throttle grip , have heard this before ...no matter how much you lube the cable it will still stick if the end of the cable has twisted or bent inside the throttle grip . Worth a look .

The same happened to me.Take the cables apart in the junction box and lube them. Check out they are free.I was twisting the throttle and I heard this squiaquing noise.I trace it down and it was in the throttle handle.Be sure the plastic washer is between the switch cover ad handle.Just spray w40 between the two.Twisted the handle a couple of times.I couldn't belived it.You should be hear a snap.Try it.

Well. I'm not laughing. Why the post is in the top chart if nobody put a post or answer. It should be last.
