I came across a 1986 FJ1200 with 26K miles with an asking price of $900. The owner seemed knowledgeable and had kept the bike up but was moving up to a Yamaha Venture for more touring. He did say it pops out of second gear but will hold if just cruising, he normally goes right to third.
My question is do you guys just ignore this or have the engine/tranny rebuilt at this stage? I'm typically an 80's Suzuki GS1100 guy but I know the FJ's run strong and for a long time and at $900 it seems like a good value, any other gotchas on these models?
Thanks,
Tim S.
2nd gear is fixed by droping the motor and spliting the c/cases.Well worth doing it.
Only 26K miles, buy it and finish the break in.

it only takes one hard missed shift to bend the shift fork on the early models.....the replacement shift forks are all the updated design.
its actually a pretty easy fix once you get the engine out of the frame.. the bottom half of the case comes off without disturbing pistons.crank. timing etc.
KOokaloo!

After you get the FJ from him, tell the guy that the Ventures have the 2nd gear issues, too... :bomb:
A Venture is not "moving up"
