Title: 130/90-16 rear tire for '84 FJ1100
Post by: TheRadBaron on August 17, 2011, 03:26:46 PM
Would I run into any nasty surprises running this slightly narrower and taller rear tire on my '84?  I'm not a tire guru, but there shouldn't be any clearance issues.  I'm aware the handling would be a bit different due to the tire shape and the fact that it would raise the rear a bit, and it would lower the revs some.
I ask because I need a new rear tire and a buddy of mine offered to give me a new Shinko 712 rear in 130/90-16.  Thanks for the advice.

Yamaha uses 3.5 inch rim. A 130/90-16 was designed for a 3. inch rim. Considering that H D has used a 130/90-16,a 140/85-16 and a 150/80-16 all on a 3" rim there is some laditude in fitting a wider tire on a narrow rim. Putting a tire that was designed for a narrower rim would probably work in a pinch. Again, I have seen this done in the HD world. The 130/90-16 tire might not be any taller then a 150/80-16. I'm not familiar with Shinko tires but I do know that a Dunlop GT501 150/80-16 is taller then a130/90-16. The last thing to cheapen out on a bike to me would be tires.

I agree.  I have used Shinkos on other bikes before and have been happy with them, though.  I won't put the 130 on the bike if it's unsafe, I'm just not sure if it is indeed unsafe or not.

The sidewall of the 150/80 is 120mm high.  The sidewall of a 130/90 is 117mm.  So, the 150 tire is taller.
