Title: 84 Shifting Problems
Post by: nvmike24 on July 19, 2011, 07:36:02 PM
My recent purchase of the 90 FJ1200 has shown me how bad the 84's trans is at jumping out of 2nd gear and intermittent (odd) clutch issues. The 90 is completely original with 53K miles. The well abused 84 has 32K miles and will leave the 90 behind in a heartbeat and has much better stopping power. I guess since I now have 2 FJ's I should split the cases and Git-R-Done on the 84. Has anyone got an opinion on who to use or not use for undercutting?

Can't hurt to check with Randy (Raduechel Performance Motorsports), he is a member of this site. http://www.fjowners.com/index.php?topic=69.0 (http://www.fjowners.com/index.php?topic=69.0)

Mike,
I am a Fast by Gast dealer which is the undercutting specialists. I actually sent back three gears sets last week as I am going to put them on the shelf for sale on the website.

The am going to be selling these as an exchange for useable cores once I get them back in my hands. They told me last week 4-6 weeks before my gear sets would be worked on.

I will send out a note when I get them back, up on the website and they are ready to go.

Fast by Gast did mine. Undercut 1st and 2nd gears...... A loooong wait (8 weeks) No complaints.
APE also undercuts but they told me that they just send their stuff to Paul Gast.

That's a great idea Randy, send a couple of gear sets out, get 'em done, and have them sitting on your shelf for folks to order them.
Save your customers a long wait....Cool beans.

Damn Randy, I wish you existed (to me) when I did the tranny (too easy/ low hanging fruit -I know) on my '85...  Would have been nice to have a set of undercut gears ready for a swap at that time.

Dang, I waited too long. I was watching the gear set on eBay and missed the deal of the year on a complete set of gears for $50! Hard to know what your getting with poor pictures but was a great deal for the one that got it.
