Title: rubber engine mounts?
Post by: grannyknot on July 16, 2011, 07:41:02 PM
1984 fj1100
Wondering if is possible or desirable to try and install the later 91-95 rubber engine mounts on my 84?
Thanks,
Chris

I think Randy at RPM has them in Beta testing.

Yes it's possible, we can put a man on the moon. However in this case, it's way too much work.
The frame and motor mounts are different between the '84-90 FJ's and the rubber mounted '91-93 FJ's. Because the frame is different, your '84's fairing will not bolt up to the '91-93 frame.
Ask Irishluck about his efforts, wait.... on second thought..... never mind.

As Mark indicated, Randy @ RPM is working on some improved rubber bushings for our 84-90 FJ's. I have one of the first sets in my '84 and I can feel the difference between these newly designed bushings and my original 28 year old rubber mounts.
I think Randy is on to something with these new motor mount bushings.

Cheers!   Pat

Quiz, because I gave up on the recent thread about this--

Is the frame itself different, or just the lower rails?  Could you swap to late lowers and gain rubber mounting (or go to older ones and remove it) if desired?

Yes, of course the lower rails are different however they (the '91-93 lower rails) will not swap over to the '84-90 frame 'cause the upper mounting points of the rails are different. With some creative welding you could cut and splice a solution onto the lower rails. It's definitely not plug and play.

The 91 & later main frame is a totally different beast. You look at the frames side by side nothing is the same. If you compair the 84 to a 90 there is family resemblance not with the 91 and up.

Thanks guys, just making a list of mods and upgrades so when I strip it down everything gets done at one time.
