Title: Something is inside my mirrors?
Post by: grannyknot on July 15, 2011, 06:21:56 PM
Just picked a pair of mirrors from ebay, fairly good shape but when I shake them up and down there is something heavy and soft inside. I can fell it bumping around inside. Is this some kind of dampening for vibrations?
Thanks,
Chris

yes. there is a large metal weight - actually 2 I believe and they are suppose to be attached to the mirror with some foam adhesive.  They unfortunately come loose do to age or if the mirror get hit hard.

There are some posts on how to correct.  Search - some drill a hole in the bottom and fill with Silcone and some fill with the spray insulating foam.

Search for the actual post if you will

Steve, thanks. Just found the thread, George probably used the big gap filling foam, expands 8-10 x
I think I'll try a couple of shots of the low expanding foam for windows and doors.

Slow down there big fella!!! Expanding foam will create pressure when it fills up the cavity and can no longer expand. Using too little will have mixed results of effectiveness, too much will brake the glass. Use Silicone/RTV sealant to fill up the the mirrors. The weight of the silicone alone will dampen the vibes and it will not expand and blow out your mirrors.

Did they come from Colombia?

very smart post FJmonkey -- I never thought about the putting too much in and breaking the glass .... yes I would agree the safer bet is sillycone no problem with knowing when to stop.....it may add to the weight of the overall bike but hey we are talk FJ here...weight ha ... I don't need no sticking badges...err weight

Whatever you fill it with, i use expanding building foam, any excess will come out of the hole that it's just been put in from.
Then just trim it off.

I know of one mirror blown out by too much foam.  I used it and it worked okay....for a while.  But even then, the foam starts breaking down from the vibration, etc., and eventually the weight got loose again.

I finally fixed it with the Henry method, I broke the mirror and got a new one.

Yep. I tried foam as well, it broke down, weeping around the glass and the weight still rattles around. I made adapters and fitted after market CBR mirrors to my 86'. Now I can see more past my elbows. They still vibrate, gonna fill em with RTV to see it the weight dampens some of it out.
