Hi there fellow FJers
I'm planning on installing a bigger oil cooler to cope with those hot Australian summers.I purchased a 13 row unit from ebay :-

I have offered it up to the oem cooler and am confidant that I can fabricate new mounting brackets and was hoping to use the oem lines.Has anyone else done this? What is the thread on the oem lines?.Is there off the shelf elbow fittings with the AN8 thread to suit the fittings on the new oil cooler and the most likely metric thread on the oil lines or am I going to have to make /modify something?.Any thoughts or info would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks and cheers! :drinks:

Here are a couple of write-ups about oil coolers; there are many more if you search the forum.

I have 2 of the 3 of the coolers I am bringing to market out getting tested right now. Once Pat gets back in the saddle that will make #3. The package will come with the brackets to bolt right into place without any modification as it uses the stock mounting.
I am confident in the application and the install. I have secured the vendor for the coolers, I am just awaiting "approval" from them, but the salesman told he did not see any issue. The hose & fitting company is just waiting for the first order and the oil pan fittings are already on the shelf.
Ed, any update?

As bullet proof as the mighty FJ mill may be, overheating is definitely a weakness. I cooked a perfectly good, low mileage motor in a traffic snarl in low 40's C from which there was no escape at all. It cost me $1300 in parts and re-boring and a couple of months off the road. I've had many earlier air cooled 4's subjected to similar and worse conditions and while they smell, creak, burn your legs and just about glow, they do so without apparent damage. The FJ is not so forgiving and I am also hanging out for Randy's oil coolers to reach production status. It appears a lot of forum members live in cooler climes and therefore is not a "universal" FJ problem.

Would also like one of the coolers, although im it tas and its a little cool at the moment, we do get few hot days in summer ;p
:ireful: I am very interested as well. Las Vegas day time temps have been over 100 consistently. Sounds like the fairing does not allow enough flow at lower in city driving. Need to find a temp gauge like for the VW engines to monitor head temps. In the shop alone whilst syncing carbs with industrial fan directed at the front of the engine I was seeing 200 degree temp at the fins on the head. :diablo: Does anyone of any XJR owners with similar troubles?

Me to, very interested in Randy's new coolers. Had a Lockhart on my GS1000G about 30 years ago up north here where temps are usually around the 40 C 6 months of the year. She worked real nice, never any probs. Look forward to fit something that is a bolt on :good:
+1 definitely

........ Randy, any progress with the oil coolers ??
flips,
I would buy the braided lines that are on offer with the unit you bought.
I bought one off the UK FJ site last year, and it does a good job of cooling things down a bit, especially noticeable here in the West.
If you also run an ignition advancer, you need an extra bit of cooling.
Bill.

No I don't have overheating issues with my XJR's even in summer traffic but of course they already run a bigger oil cooler, more cooling fin area on the head and block plus they run Nikisal plated cylinders and the injection runs richer the hotter the engine gets, all of which probably make things a little less heat stressed...
But nonetheless, this Earls curved cooler is the oil cooler I've bought to use on my XJR for a turbo engine build I'm doing.

"Roxy" with a turbo would be....stunning!
I'll be looking for a larger oil cooler as well. Be nice to have a straight bolt-on conversion.
Yep. I got lots of work to do! Hopefully the house sales will all go through smoothly and I'll have a shed to start work in. Rock on October!
Hey West OZ XJR Do you have a Source for Turbo Header Pipes for the XJR ? and are you turboing a Injected XJR or Carby model?
