Title: New to FJ's
Post by: movenon on July 07, 2011, 10:12:04 PM
Hi
After a 10 years without a bike around I decided to get bike to play with. I bought a 1990 FJ with 31K in pretty good condition. The wife said she should have just got me an erector set... Anyhow I am enjoying getting acquainted with the bike. I did the usual fluid changes, adjusted the valves (thanks RPM for the tool and valve cover gaskets). Made a tool for the forks and a tool for adjusting the head bearing. Made a bracket to install 7/8 handlebars and moved them to a better location for me. Made the bike support stand as per "Markm"s instructions on the forum (mandatory if you want to work on an FJ yourself, well maybe not mandatory but damn handy). Installed new seals in the clutch slave (thanks again to RPM) . Inspected and adjusted the chain. Installed a new battery (getting to old to push start).... The carbs probably need to be cleaned and rebuilt (started stock piling the parts needed) but will hopefully hold for a winter project along with cleaning and lubing the rear suspension. Also made a carb balancing device, works great.
I have 100,000 plus miles mostly on a BMW RT 100 and of course many other bikes have come and gone in between. Retired military aircraft mech with some time in the Aerial Port. MSF basic skills course many years ago.
Many thanks to everyone on the forum. I think I have read every posting in all the subject areas. It answered a lot of questions. Great resource ! One thing about owning a 21 year old bike is someone has been there and done that, just look around. Don't mean to ramble.
Oh I'm 62. Old body young mind......... I think..

Thanks. I started looking for a bit more of a touring bike but an add came along on this FJ and I decided to go check it out. What can I say, I sat on it fired it up and a voice inside me said "this is going home with me" (I think it was the devils voice). The bike just "fit" and one thing I have learned is, if the bike doesn't "fit" you will never be happy with it. You can live with a lot but if its to tall, heavy, unstable etc. you are just wasting your time and money. It has a set of F1 exhaust on it and it sounded close to a P-51, love real machines. I am enjoying the simplicity and lack of useless bell's and whistles. Thanks again.
