Chaps,
What do you think of this nugget?
No DMV reg renewal appeared on my doormat, so I phoned to see what to do.
My luck was in, I actually got through to a person in under 10 mins. (that's a success story in itself)
Explained: Reg expires in July, so here's my money, give me my reg - simple really.
No (course not) - due to some unsettled legislation, no regs are being issued now Mr French, to anyone.
But I'm going on me hols with the bike.
Don't worry Mr French, all CHP officers know that regs are lapsing.
They do, do they?
Yes Mr French.
Well I'm also going out of state, so do all traffic cops across the country know how much of a mess you've made of it?
Oh yes Mr French, all coppers know we don't have a clue how to run a raffle let alone a state system. Just go on your trip, you'll be fine.
Remember this post folks as it may be summoned as evidence in a court of law at a later date.
We leave on our annual bike trip July 19th.
Any guesses?
Sorry about no reg.... Ever thought about moving to Idaho :). (balanced budget state). As Greece go's so will Calif. (same basic problem , bankrupt). Give it another 24 - 36 months. Thats the doom and gloom anyhow. I say get on the bike ride like the wind and don't look back (you will turn into salt or something like that) :)).

Any guesses?
No guess here, a 99% certainty that DMV will mail out your bike registration in October, with the 15% penalty included for being late.
Let's see you explain that on the phone this fall..... :dash1:
I found this in regard to the DMV registration changes, it might be worth carrying a copy.
Randy - RPM
SUBJECT: Vehicle Registration Renewal Due On or After July 1, 2011
Memo Date: June 8, 2011
Purpose: To provide information to law enforcement, courts, parking and toll agencies on a recent legislative enactment that changes the way by which vehicle registration renewal fees are collected for vehicle registrations due on or after July 1, 2011.
Background Senate Bill 94, signed into law by the Governor on May 4, 2011, makes significant changes to the statutes governing the billing and renewal process for registration fees due on or after July 1, 2011.
New Information
Effective immediately, the changes to the law amended California Vehicle Code (CVC) §§1661, 4000, 4601, 5902.5 and 9554. The law changes how the Department of Motor Vehicles processes registration renewal fees due on or after July 1, 2011, including:
• Registration renewal notices will be mailed out on or close to the expiration date instead of 60 days in advance of the registration expiration date.
• Registration fees may not be collected until the expiration of the current registration date or the department has issued a renewal notice, whichever occurs first.
• All customers are given a 30-day grace period from the vehicle registration expiration date before late penalties are assessed.
Vehicles with registration expiring on or after July 1, 2011, cannot be cited for violation of CVC § 4000(a) until the first day of the second month following the month after the registration expiration date.
Example: A registration expiration date of July 15, 2011, cannot not be cited for CVC
§4000(a) prior to September 1, 2011.
Note: These changes to California Vehicle Codes are currently set to expire midnight December 31, 2011.

That seems to confirm it all then, which is nice. I'll go with that official sounding info from Randy in the first instance, then when it all turns up late as Pat suggests, I'll just suck it up and 'pay the fee' (as works for 99% of all official BS), then relocate to Greece until December 2011, when the new DMV conditions implode and the next round of overly complicated, completely unnecessary, mind blowingly pointless Cal regulations take effect, just to mess with you. And hands off the state parks while you're listening, not that you are even now, bunch of gov. dickheads.
Thanks for the info Randy! I was just sitting here today actually wondering why I hadn't received my renewal notices for one of my cars and my 89 FJ which are both up for renewal on July 8th. Now I know. Luckily I am a AAA member - so I was just planning on going into one of their close offices (they can do everything the DMV does - except for drivers licences) before that date and taking care of everything. But now I don't have to - thanks!
Those of you who live in Southern CA know that going to the DMV can literally take up an entire day - and drive you to madness. The AAA membership fee is worth it to avoid that hassle alone!
I went to a CA DMV, it was great!
I got to watch a woman look at the carpet for, oh, ten minutes, then she sighed and looked at the ceiling tiles for quite some time.
Finding no inspiration from above, she then heaved her bulk out of her chair, waddled over to her colleagues work station and they spent a moment together looking at an entirely different patch of carpet.
One of them then noticed some discolouration on a pot plant that consumed another five minutes and took a considerable amount of wistful chin stroking and expressive nodding.
It was quite touching, the way they were in complete synchronisation, stoke, nod, stroke, nod.
All done in silence, a contemplative moment if ever there was one.
She then came back to where I was waiting and became fascinated by a blob of blue-tac that she stretched and and kneaded while staring, mouth agape, at another patch of carpet.
Transfixed,I leaned over the counter a little and stared at the carpet too.
I couldn't see just what it was that had so consumed this womans faculties, maybe it was like one of those "3D" posters you sometimes see at shopping malls, maybe it was just me or maybe, just maybe, she had lost her mind from working there.
We must be lucky. The DMV around here is great. I am just surprised they have so much patience with all the idiots that come in with the craziest scenarios. I know I am in for a long wait when the person walks up to the DMV employee and has a wheel barrel of paper work and family members as witnesses....

Mine is about $50 for 12 months in Indiana for an '89.
Sliding scale based on years old, and book value.
No safety inspection required. :shok:

Indy
$50 a year here also :good2:
Thats the price it should be, dam ,im heading over
$12.50. Almost makes up for the shorter riding season.
$12.50 bloody hell, any chance u have a spare plate and sticker u could send down, even with a fine if i was caught out ,would still be cheaper than rego here

10.00 annual inspection fee and 19.00 annual registration here in NC
KOokaloo!
$18.00 annually in PA, USA.
Dan
Ok , ok, i get the picture, were being ripped off more than i thought over here :)
$47.50, including the personalized plate ($25).... KUKLU
This is just depressing lol, id be happy with just $100. for 12 months, any wonder the gov here can give themselves a 5k pay rise every 6 months
Our Rego fees also include compulsory third party insurance.
Well,
Apparently, the state of California and my county have decided the registration fees are going to resolve the budget crisis...
I got the registration for my wife's FJ today...
Wait for it...
... :unknown:
:shok:$133.00 :shok:
I just paid for my one ton box van yesterday on the 31st and it was $160.00, which I did not figure was too bad for a commercial vehicle.
I guess since they cannot work within the balanced budget they passed, the other fees must compensate for it...
Too many chiefs and not enough Indians... :scratch_one-s_head:

Motorcycle registration (renewal)
The cost of motorcycle registration renewal will vary depending on the cubic capacity (engine size) and the postcode of the motorcycle's garaged address. The following is an example only:
Motorcycle - metro area Engine capacity
Fee
Engine capacity less than 61cc $114.20
Engine capacity greater than 60cc but less than 126cc $336.40
Engine capacity greater than 125cc but less than 501cc $433.20
Engine capacity greater than 500cc $577.30
Randy, be thankful you don't live in Oz come rego time. The above is copied straight from the Govt. website.
In Indiana, plate fees are calculated by years old, and book value.
So the ol' FJ is down to around $50... :i_am_so_happy:
You gotta move out of the metro area!
My last rego on the FJ was $444.40 (only?? )
My other bike of litre size cost $376.60
I can only guess why the difference unless they credit me with already having paid the "motorcycle safety levy" on the FJ.
I didn't realize what a DEAL I was getting from VicRoads, sheesh!

The Oz fees make me afeel that we are getting off easy, hope CA does not know of this.
1987 FJ = $128 and 2008 Warrior = $170 for a motorcycle registration tax, I mean fee, of $298 per year.
:shout:Of course this does not include the two cars which more than doubles this. :shout:
