Hello, I am in the process of re-ringing a 1985 FJ1100 and as I slipped the cylinder heads off the block I notice the black plastic/rubber sheathing that is on the lower part of the long threaded rod is deteriated. What is the purchsed of this sheathing... sound deading? Does it have to be replaced?
Can I use shrink tubing?
Thanks in advance
Tony

Tony, I think mainly because those studs are exposed, the coating is on them for protection from the elements.
Harvy.
Leave em off. The OEM replacement studs lack them. I think they're for appearances sake more than anything.
