Title: stock alternator, how many amps?
Post by: grannyknot on June 26, 2011, 07:06:45 PM
Hi,
I would like to add some heated grips to my 84/FJ1100 and maybe some driving lights in the future
but I'm not sure if there is enough capacity handle all that, anyone have an idea?
Thanks,
Chris

Your alternator is rated at 14v, 26amps @ 5000 rpm.

This is 364 watts @ 5000 rpm, which is actually quite good for a carbureted bike (FI bikes need power for the fuel injection, so they typically have alternators that produce more power).  Powerlet gives a baseline for your average carbureted bike of roughly 195 watts (which takes into account all lighting, ignition and engine management computer if needed) needed to run the motorcycle, so potentially what output is leftover can be used for accessories.

I run heated grips, a Gerbings Jacket liner, gloves and socks on my '84 FJ in the winter with plenty of charging power to spare.  I also have taller gearing (18/39t) so I almost never cruise at 5K (which is almost 90 mph with this gearing) and have been fine.

To be fair, all of my lighting has been switched from incandescent to LED (turn signals, brakes and instrument cluster) and my head light is a 35 Watt HID, so I've freed up at least 35 watts of juice.

Hope this helps.

get one of these and you'll always know at a glance what's up with your charging system.

Fantastic! I can even wear my vest with that kind of power.
Thanks
