hi gilles , 45 years old living in belgium ; i've got one mtx 80 honda and rgv suzuki 250. i got my first fj today (my work colleague said to me 3 weeks ago " i know you like repair bike if you want i've got something in my house for you .i give it to you !! )i'm very happy , beautiful present !
it's a 83 model with only 20000 km and very very nice under the dust !
the engine didn' t turn for 10 years so i think i'll do these checks :
breaking parts and new durits
seal of the fork (lot's of oil a the front of the bike )
tyres
oil engine
empty carbs
is there something important to do ?thanks for your help

Excellent find/ gift and you've come to the right place for help and advice on how to get her purring again. As was said, it looks like an '84, Yamaha did not make an '83 FJ1100.
In the files section, elsewhere on this site, there are instructions for rebuilding the carbs. Simply draining them will likely not be enough. I am guessing you will also need remove them and clean them and likely need new needle seat o-rings. Also check the tank for rust, if it is rusty, you'll need to address that, or get REALLY good at cleaning the carbs, because you'll be doing it frequently...
Oh, and you will likely need a battery, but I'm guessing you already knew that....

Actually I have seen quite a bit of evidence of an 83' FJ, not saying it is or isn't. But I have heard enough about it to believe it could be.
Usually the color I see associated with 83' is white and black

Not buying that. At least not for the US market. Maybe it was in Japan/ or Europe?? -can't tell for sure, but more likely in my mind, it's some knucklehead that bought one in December 1983 and called it a '1983' or some such.
Be interesting to find out -I tried the Yamaha site but it seems woefully inadequate for displaying model histories etc.

Welcome to the group! That's a jewel you've found there, it will take some work to bring it back from the rough egdes brought on by storage.
1983? A typo does not a model year make.

Gilles, while your FJ was probably built in 1983, it would be designated a 1984 model....... it is common to have the year production run starting to be built in the previous year. Mine for instance is a 1991 model, but was built in Oct or Nov (can't remember exactly) of 1990.
