Title: GPS Stuff
Post by: rktmanfj on May 02, 2009, 01:36:48 PM

For those who have been waiting to buy a GPS because of the cost, this looks like a pretty good deal:

Order up a RAM mount to go with it, and you're in for just under 1 Benjamin, total.       :good:

Seems like a lot of bang for the buck to me.

If I didn't already have a waterproof GPS, I'd be all over it.  Hell, I may get one anyway.

I haven't had too good of luck with Magellan, customer service or their products(admittedly, handhelds).
I've found Garmin to be much better. Just my $.02.

I'm not real happy with my Magellan Roadmate, either. My sister has the Garmin, and I have 2 friends with the Tom-Tom. For the dough, I'd go with the Tom-Tom. They have some real nice accessories available.

Speaking of which, where are you guys mounting your GPS? I've been eyeballing possible locations, but I can't find the place that I really like. Suggestions?

Mike,
I have mine mounted between the bars. I made a little metal offset and used a ram mount and cradle with a medium size arm for my Garmin Nuvi. It is a very solid mount. I am happy with it..

I can easily see it over my tank bag. HTH

Here is where I mounted my Garmin Zumo...works great!  I don't even have to move my head to see it.

Very nice. You've all given me some ideas on where to put mine. I'm coming down the home stretch toward graduation (Engineering Design at Dunwoody College), and I know that some of the kids in the Machining program are looking for some things to occupy their time (and to submit as their senior project). I think I may have to design me a hybrid mounting and get produced (maybe for free).

Thanks to you all for the ideas!

Steering stem nut with a ram mount works perfect. Fully adjustable so I can see all my gauges, and even over top my big tank bag.

Hey Eric, how did you mount your  Panoram bike computer?  Is that velcro or double sided tape under it??   Or did you use the existing mounting hardware that came with the unit?

I used some 3M dual lock similar to velco only stronger.

I also modified the mounting plate and added a 1/4'' inch aluminum spacer to elevate the gauge to clear the top plate. In fact Im getting ready to remove the panaram from the fj if you would like it let me know. I will even throw in some dual lock to mount it and a plate to mount the pickup if you are running yamaha monobloc brake calipers.

Thanks for the info!   I am all set for a unit, just looking for alternatives to mount it.  I used to have a nice little 'L bracket' that mounted under the clip-on and then put the panoram hardware onto that, but it must have had a bad harmonic and it workharded in the bend and ultimately failed there on a long highway drone back to the valley last summer.  I've make a quick fix with a ziptie and a pinch of foam, but need a more elegant solution.  I think you have found my next evolution for the mounting of it!  If you are looking to flip the cyclometer, you should make it a bonus gift for the guy who takes the rally drum home for the summer or starts the biggest rally fire!   oh I know... it goes to whomever can show the largest performance award during the rally, remember, it does keep the max speed between resets!!  muwhahahaha     :yahoo:

Safety FAST!

Here is how I mounted my cheap Garmin c530 (got it new for $130 last year).  It's not waterproof, does not support saved routes, but it works well enough for me.  I like having it mounted higher.  It's a RAM mount with a short arm, and I glued on a safety wire hook on the back.  It has not fallen off yet, but I worry.
