Title: Knock knock...
Post by: Carterc on June 07, 2011, 07:45:57 PM
So i started up my bike today and my father pointed out a knocking sound that was in tune with with the shaking of the engine, if that makes sense. Im assuming this is a big problem... Please inform.

does the sound go away or get worse when you ride it at higher rpm's?

Camchain, starter chain, loose engine mount.

Less likely but more expensive is a bearing someplace.

what RPM is your idle set ?

the FJ likes to idle about 1100 RPM.... lower idle speeds can result in all kinds of weird (  but normal)  noises

KOokaloo!

Loose exhaust possibly?  Cracked or loose fairing?  Trying to narrow down a knock or vibration on the FJ seems to be a "needle in a hay-stack" kind of thing.

Let us know what you find.   (popcorn)

rpm is set at 1100 and the knock is definitely in the engine, i put a long screw driver on the engine block and listened to it by putting my ear on the end of the screw driver (poor mans stethoscope). Also, today i took the bike to work and when i got here it was smoking from the engine..... I'm no mechanic and I'm about to give up on this bike, this is ridiculous.

As Andy and Frank said it's not very likely to be anything more than weird/normal noises. As far as the smoking goes, your bike is 25 years old, a small oil leak is nothing to panic over. It is pretty common for the rubber seals on the valve cover bolts to dry out and leak, be a shame to give up over a $3 rubber seal.

Even when properly set, the clutch basket and cams both rattle and clatter a bit at idle....

:music: have you synced the carbs? Low idle and carbs out of sync will make primary chain racket. I agree on the smoke issue, she be an old girl. Being loud does not prevent poor mans hearing aide from working. Bump the idle up to 1500-2000 and see what area you can find the noise loudest.

ps: what's the asking price? Just yankin your chain. Relax
