Title: Helmet lock ideas
Post by: 1tinindian on June 01, 2011, 10:55:55 PM
Let's start a discussion on how we lock our helemts onto our bikes while away from the bike.
I can't seem to make mine fit, so it's not resting on the hot exhaust.

Has anyone modded a mount for a helmet lock?

Let the ideas flow, as I would like to see how you guys have solved this problem.
Pictures would be a big help!

Thanks,
Leon

I carry it with me.  I'm not leaving an expensive piece of my personal protection (you know, the one that I hope saves my life in a wreck) unattended on my machine while I'm away.  Too many stories of them becoming urinals and worse.

Throw the little bag in your pocket when you ride, and throw the helmet in the bag so it's easier to carry when away from the bike.

I also take it with me.  Seen and heard too many stories about how people come out to find just the strap locked to the bike and the helmet gone.

On the flip side I have read about people using one of these locks to lock their helmet to another part of the bike when the stock helmet lock won't cut it.  "Butterfly" trailer lock.

I lock mine on the bike, no problem.

The exhaust hasn't damaged my helment but if you're worried, place an old leather glove between your lid and the pipe.

On my cruiser without a helmet lock, I use a cable/padlock and secure it through the trunk bracket. You could run a cable through the grab rails on the FJ.

Most of the time my tailpack is empty and I just put it in there.  Othertimes I've used the OEM lock on the right side and not had any problems, nor had the exhaust leave any marks.  If I'm not comfortable leaving it with the bike, I carry it.

When I travel to common locations like work or Walmart, I normally lock my helmet on my bike in the stock location.  I position it so the face is forward and the left side up.  This gives me the exact length I need on the D-ring strap to put the helmet over the rear blinker.  The blinker arm keeps my helmet from sagging down on to the hot exhaust pipe.  Never had an issue.

I too didn't like the idea of the helmet on the exhaust. So I connect the chin straps around the grab handle in the rear.
It's not locked but I guess I trust people more than the other members here. At least until I find my helmet missing and have to buy another one.

Normally, it goes with me, on those rare occasions where I don't think I'll be able to carry it with, I take a cable lock and use that, thru the eyeport to the upper triple tree. I've seen too many chin straps cut to use that method....  :dash1:

I use the factory helmet lock on the FJ.  The FJR doesn't come with one, but a guy makes a bracket.  A universal option is the helmet guardian, which goes on  your license plate mount.

totw kewl metal as seen on youtube. helmet locks for your handlebar ends. keeps the helmet away from everything. they are not cheap at 40 dollars for 1 or 75 or so for both sides. I have the same problem with my fj1200. My exhaust touches the helmet and leaves marks witch sucks because I just bought a Gmax with blinking lights. P.S. everyone loves the dam blinking lights. I dont have 40 bucks so I leave the helmet on the mirror.

I have the exact same helmet and anchor it at the stock location without a problem. Do you hang it over the rear signal when you lock it? (read my post above)
I must agree about the lights. I get questions about them every day. Obviously they serve their purpose, because everyone sees them.

I use the stock location and let it touch the exhaust --- but I usually find something to put in between the muffler and the helmet --leaves ---piece of paper etc.... works to insulate it from the exhaust for the time it takes to cool down
