:wacko3: I have just purchased, fired up and rode my first bike ever...I'm 31 yo. live in Sacramento California and am loving my bike...I purchased a 1984 fj1100 with original fairings(top n bottom...oh yes original bottom fairing). It has stainless steel, clutch fuel and breaklines on it with 34,xxx miles. idle a little rough but will be addressing that soon. I have never owned, rode or even started a bike til now (except dirt toys) and have to say, WHAT A RUSH!!!!. I'm gonna take'er easy for a while til i get more experience on the road and get a feel for the ol' girl just to be safe :i_am_so_happy:. I look forward to talking to you all and will post pics soon. she shows some age but nothin a lil love wont fix. other then that its a very addictive feeling hittin the turns on my baby...her name is Kimberly BTW :greeting: lol. Hope to enjoy her for years to come and future rally's, rides and chats with all of you. til then... :drinks:

It's among the best feelings in the world watching that rev needle climb and things starting to go by really fast.
Be carefull out there and try not to push your ability, which can be hard with so much power on tap.

First, welcome here. You have found the right place for help on maintaining and upgrading of your shiny new bike, and a good group of guys to boot.
Forgive my bluntness please, but your post makes me take pause, a bit. Hell of a first bike indeed! There's a lot of power you just bought there, without a bit of training or experience on motorcycles, you're highly susceptible to hurting yourself and/or the bike. It is possible to train yourself, but statically speaking, you're going to wreck that bike and/or hurt yourself. While I'm being a proxy for your dad (it's a curse) the chosen subject line of your first post does not bode well either. -Respect for the machine and its potential, an honest understanding of your skills, and life expectancy are directly related to one another.
As above, I would highly recommend you take an MSF class, get some structured training of some sort. At very least, take it much more easily, and for much longer than you think you should. Spend a few hours in a parking lot practicing throttle control (critical) and braking control (front and back -also critical), including emergency braking, braking while leaned over, (squeeze progressively, -never 'grab') and practice last minute-object avoidance. Practice tighter and tighter figure 8's/ circles, both directions within a defined space. None of this will be wasted on the street.
Having said all that, my opinion and $1.70 will get you a cup of Starbucks' finest. Take it for what it's worth.

I bought an FJ1200 with ZERO motorcycle experience....and INITIALLY it didn't turn out well (don't wanna talk 'bout it) :)
Anyrate, a motorcycle safety course will do you TONS of good. Definitely worth the time and $$$
