Title: chassis number? where is it?
Post by: fiatpandaman on May 09, 2011, 12:29:48 PM
Hello everyone!

Bit of a panic situation, my Dad has been restoring a FJ1100 for about 12 months now, it came to him in several boxes and paintwork needing some TLC.
We/he finally took it to get it MOT'd today and they wouldn't do it as they couldn't find the chassis number, we have been over it and I nether of us can find it. I suppose it was a bit naive not to have checked this 12 months ago but it didn't even cross our minds.

On my Diversion 600 the number is stamped on the frame by the head section but there is nothing on his.

We know its a import but we have little other history at this point

Can some one point me in the direction to find this number, and if its duplicated any where else on the frame?

if we cant find it, what next? he has the logbook and everything is legal as regards that

Sorry the first post is a question (always the way)

Thanks,

I take it you're in the UK when you say you took it for an MOT?
Where was it imported from? US, Europe, Japan?
US ones usually have what i can only describe as a plastic strip stuck onto the headstock with the chassis number on it.
European and Japanese have the number stamped, just like on the engine.
This could turn into a right pain in the arse if you can't prove what the chassis number is.
Sorry not to be of much help.

He didn't paint over the number by mistake did he?
There are a couple of frames on the bay at the mo.

Thanks for your reply!

We are indeed in the UK
Were not sure where it was imported from, just that it was.

There is nothing on the headstock, there are two very small holes where it looks like there may have been a plate or something, but no stamps at all. What side should the stamps be? and does any one have a photo of the area so I can be sure its where is should be? (with number greyed out for your own protection)

I can see this becoming a pain very quickly :(

The engine still has the number on it odely..

I'm in the UK aswell.
Those two small holes sound like they are where the plate was rivetted to. I've got an XS1100 that was an import from the US and the plate is still rivetted to the headstock with one at the top about 6 or 7 centimetres above the one below.
If you can't find the plate knocking around the workshop area i'd be tempted to buy another frame. Unless you can get a dodgy garage to stamp the frame with the number that's on the V5. :diablo:
Where are you based by the way?  I'm in Cheshire.

DVLA might just have the recorded info though.   :negative:

Thanks again, I know it wasn't taken off during the work stage. He would recall something like that. Midlands, Shropshire to be precise so not that far away at all!
It was mentioned that the engine number and chases number was the same on all bikes up to a age, the vin number on the log book is the number stamped on the engine!

We will strip the tank and fairing off again tomorrow and investigate :(

Oh, and to ad insult, the new front tyre put on its now flat....they joys..

Shropshire eh?  Very nice. We're having an XS camping weekend at a place near Craven Arms this next May Bank Holiday.

You never know it could have been pulled off accidently and is sitting in a nook or cranny.  :unknown:

uk bikes have a little plate riveted on the left of headstock and also have number stamped on the top of the right hand frame rail under the infill panel that fits between fairing and tank.

My 3CV has the number stamped on the top frame outer rail, right of the headstock.  Almost visible from the seat, but obscured by the right fairing inner panel.
Sorry, I'm not removing the panel to take a picture, but trust me, it's there.  I also have the tag below the headstock, riveted in place.

i normally take the infill panel off for the mot as it saves a lot of time and confusion searching for no's

Thanks all,

Have checked today after taking it apart, no numbers :(

No plate on the uder head area and no label on the bottom section (where photo indicates)

This is going to get messy by the sounds of it

have you checked the right hand frame rail about half way alongside the tank, under panel should be stamped on there in letters/numbers about 1cm tall, even if panel on side of headstock is missing and there is not one on the bottom it should still be stamped there as it is stamped straight into the frame.

This is where it should be located on the frame:
On the top right frame member beside the steering stem.

I like the looks of the horns Ed. What are they? Also the braided lines with the anodized fittings. :good2:

Jake, the horns were nothing special, they've already gone by the wayside.  Think OEM horn, but quieter even after the relay mod.  Now working on the Wolo Bad-Boy, claimed at 132 db.  We'll see ...  Doesn't want to fit, never mind the claimed SPL.

Brake lines are Galfer.  Work nice, but not worth the money.  IIRC, the are -2 AN; the local shop doesn't work "with crap that small".  Find a local shop to build exact lines for you, they'll save you some money, I'm sure.

Ok i know this is a old thread but i had the same problem and fortunately have found the number but i had it had been painted over when new so was unfindable [ is that a word] until i received help from a local facebook post
The frame number was indeed stamped on the right side frame under the fairing , right opposite the head stock , i could not see anything and took to the area with , paint stripper, and emery cloth and like magic the number appeared
i will post a picky shortly
cheers
