Hello, I have an 86 FJ1200 that slips out of 2nd gear at about 4000rpms when I'm hard on the throttle, I need this problem to be fixed. My buddy with a 600rr keeps catching up to me when this problem happens and i need it stopped. I bought the Clymer book and its about to be rainy season here in Florida so nows the time to get my hands dirty. Do i just open the tranny and take out the gears and replace it? Or what? Please help a Fj rider in need.
thanks
Chris
Here's one method of fixing the problem. http://www.fj1100.com/pages/2ndgear.htm (http://www.fj1100.com/pages/2ndgear.htm) It's based on the 1100 but all FJ gearboxes are the same.
Whenever i've gone into the gearbox i've always done a complete engine strip, others will be along soon with offers of advice.

Second one references the link previously posted.
You don't necessarily have to do a full rebuild, but unless you're dead certain of the condition of the top end, there's really no better time to do it. A new camchain, starter chain, starter chain guide, camchain guide, and the usual other bits should be done at the same time; gives you a fresh engine to start with.
good luck with the trans and remember to replace the shift forks.
