Title: New Member - FJ1200 - 1986 - 41,000 Km
Post by: Signaller on April 17, 2011, 11:35:20 AM
Good day,
1.   I would like to first raise my hat to the person, persons or team who manage this outstanding forum.
2.   I also would like to acknowledge the extraordinary wealth of knowledge the membership provides.
3.     I hope that I can contribute as you have.
4.     Yesterday I became the proud new owner of an FJ 1200. I must say that after "lurking" on this site for a couple of days I was convinced that this machine was meant for me.
5.     The last bike I had was a 1982 GPZ750. It was a wonderful bike but when the kids and life stepped in I lost site of motorcycling for a few years. Now Im 50 yrs old, 32 yrs in the military, and away from home. I live in Toronto Ontario and my family live in North Bay. i don't have a veh in Toronto (I left the car for my wife's use) so I thought why not a motorcycle for the summer. Save fuel, have fun, and relax the way I once did with the wind, the engine, and my thoughts.
6.      When I purchased the bike yesterday it came with Safety Certification papers so now all I have to do is get the plate and insurance on Monday.
7.     At any rate I just thought I would introduce myself so as not to be a "lurker" anymore. Im sure that we will have many conversations.

Dan

Good day FJmonkey,
Yes the paint is still original. There are a few minor cracks in the plastics but nothing that jumps out at you. I will have to effect some repairs this summer. The "chin scoop" has received some abrasion from road debris along its leading edge which took the paint off to the plastic. I think I may have a charging problem, but Im not sure yet. And there may be some fuel leaking from the carbs, a couple of drops over night but not much. I've been looking at allot of information here and now I just need the time to pick the best solution. There is so much information here its hard to isolate solutions. Its also nice to see the camaraderie that is evident here. Thanks for looking at my post.

Welcome Dan, :hi:

Another 86FJ is a welcome sight, the red and whites rule.

You are gonna love the way it runs  :good:

some of the problems with the 86 are a weak shift fork that leads to 2nd gear jumping out while under load. If yours is ok just be easy with it and the problem will not develop later on.

The clutch slips under heavy acceleration as the spring is a weak part. there is a lot of info about modifications to the clutch but usually adding a second diaphragm spring on top of the current one solves the problem.

If you remove your carbs for some work be careful of the fuel line routing and keep it stock or you will starve your carbs.

The stock fork springs are on the weak side and should be replaced with straight rate springs. This will help from scraping your chin faring.

so get it on the road and put some miles on her and enjoy the power and grace that is the fj.

check out the gallery of bikes and see some of the modifications done by the guys.

Hi Dan,
There are few of us in the GTA. You'll have a blast with your '86. And this is indeed a great place for all things FJ.
Welcome to the group.

This is so neat. Talking with people from the "GTA" to God know where. I got the bike off Kijiji from a fella in Port Perry. Thanks for the post.

Dan, Frank,
Thanks for the welcome. I wonder though? Do you measure fuel economy by MPG (Miles per gallon), Liters per 100 km, Or MPS (Miles per smile) Just wondering

l/100km ... but we're all bilingual, so we understand MPG ... and MPS is a given.

As far as the FJ goes I'm looking at insurance by 09:00, plates/registration by 12:00, Leave request in by 12:30, packed and on the road by 13:30 for a 4 hrs trip to North Bay and my wife's birthday. She has wanted me to get another bike for years now.

But I have one!
Yes mate, my Aussie FJ, it's a '91 onwards model with the same USD YZF 750 forks and Ohlins rear shock set up as the Seppo one.
So, I still have an FJ.
At one stage I had four of them, two in the U.S (one on the East Coast and one on the West Coast) and two in Australia.

Fjmonkey, Mark Olson, Bob, Dan Filetti, racerman_27410 (Frank), Klavdy and jvb_ca Thanks for the welcome and advise from all of you. As I said somewhere in the thread above I left Toronto on Monday with an outside temperature of 5 degrees C. It was a cold ride for 4 hrs but Oh...! My...! God...! what a ride. This machine is fantastic. I thought allot of my 1982 GPZ 750. At any rate the trip was far to short and I arrived in North Bay far to soon, I didn't get my fill of riding but I had my wife to think of as it was her birthday and she was waiting to see the bike. Might I say that she loves it as much as I do. I had mentioned that there is a Corbin seat I could get for the bike which would be more comfortable and she was all for it. This is going to be a great relationship (the FJ1200, my wife, and me) Its almost like having a mistress that the wife, not only puts up with but also invites for tea. Im having a couple of minor problems which I will move into one of the other forums. The only real kink right now is that today (Wed April 20, 2011) in North Bay we are currently receiving 15 to 20 cm of SNOW!!!!

Have a good day all. I have some shoveling to do.....

Dan

And here I was grumbling about the rain, at least it's melting our snow... Good to hear another perspective from the north (of me). Nice job getting the wife on board, literally and figuratively!

You gettin snow up there? Has been raining/misting here all day. :negative:
Hope you have warm riding gear as its still pretty cool around here to be on the bike at highway speeds for a couple of hours.
I am waiting for it to warm up a bit so I can finish the head bearings on the bike in my non heated garage..

Cheers...Jake

Bob, Jake,
I will be going back to Toronto on Monday 25 April 11.  I don't know what the weather will be like but the long range forecast looks ok, something around 8 Degrees C.  Do you think it would be worthwhile to meet somewhere for coffee?

All,
If you have sometime to kill maybe we can meet at a location along the 400 somewhere? I don't know the area well so if there are any suggestions, please provide.

Just thought I'd put it out there.  Of course I will have to see how this snow thing works out.

Normally, I'd be in. But I'll be on the road back from visiting the in-laws in Windsor (and no, not on the FJ; whole family in a minivan).
But let's keep it in mind... always looking for a good reason to ride :good:

Snow on the ground here as well...yikes....

Dan, Monday I will be back to work. Hopefully will find time to put the FJ back together this weekend. Currently in pieces waiting for new head bearings to go in.
My boat also needs bottom paint and tune up etc. Family get togethers/dinners.... So much to do....so little time......
Will definitely have to hook up for a ride some time.. :good2:

Cheers...Jake

Plenty warm! If it's like last year I'm gettin A/C for the Corbin. Either that or we've got to pick up the pace and flow some air.
