Title: Penske shock
Post by: weymouth399 on April 05, 2011, 10:59:03 AM
I have been thinking of a penske group buy, just trying to get a gauge of who might be in.
I am looking into pricing from a few places. If anyone else has any info on suppliers please speak up.
Or any other important info.

I am nearly ready for a Penske.  I need one for the mods I am doing and am planning on a custom order in the next month or so....  let me know as I am most definitely in!

Hey Bob, does this mean the shock on your bench will be for sale? I love them secondhand parts. Or third.

Doug

NO NO NO that one is for the 86 (she is pretty though) If I was to ride the 89 maybe, but a friend of ours wants one bad.
But I know of a few others that would like one, but it's a big investment for our bikes. And I'm sure worth every penny.

It looks like Jim Lindemann, one of my favorites, has sold his business to Ed Sorbo and closed his Campbell, CA shop.

I don't see a on-line catalog yet.

Shame, I got both my Penske 8981's from Jim for ~$650 each (2005)

Bob,

I'll throw my hat in the ring on that Penske.  As you may know, I have a 90 FJ.  Since I put the 17" wheel on the back of my bike, the stock rear shock told me that if I do not do something soon, she will throw me.  Also, with the wife riding with me, the old shock just bottoms out.

So, yep, I'm up for that.  Keep me posted.  I am closing a couple of escrows later this month so funds will be available.  :yahoo:

Cheers,

CraigO

Bob.
I bought my Penske Sport Shock from Traxion Dynamics a while back. Good people to deal with, and they know what spring and valving we need for our FJ's. I believe one of the Chris's had his bike in their shop a few years back and they dialed his in. Is sort of a baseline now.

Give them a shout...

Please consider this as an alternative. http://www.sasquatchrider.com/index.html (http://www.sasquatchrider.com/index.html)

I sent him my shock for my XR650L and he did a great job. My shock was already serviceable so he didn't have to do as much work but check out the pics of of the shocks that he added remote reservoirs. Very trick. He will do this for many bikes and has been building for 20+ years. Maybe he will do a group discount.  It is a fraction of the cost of a new shock. I found out about him on the ADV site.

I am interested in a penske shock for my '84 but I just can't swing it right now;  Too many things ahead of it in the queue.  Now, if this goes slow mo like other group buys I've seen on other sites then I'm game.  If it goes quickly like the renntec bar group buy (at least I got in on that) then I'll have to pass.  But if its not a big discount then I'm not gonna worry about it, since if I can afford paying for a penske that's only 10 or 15% off I'll be able to swing regular price when the time comes.

I have recently purchased a 1990 FJ 1200, very clean but no damping in the shock (scary). I would be interested in getting in on a Penske group buy. Sooner would be better. Has anyone tried a Works Performance shock before?

There is this YSS shock as well. I know nothing about them but are around $500 USD delivered. Half the price of a Penske or Ohlins.

I just want to remind/refresh that I am in the middle of design & engineering of a rear shock. I am scheduled to receive the mechanical engineering drawings and specs as early as tomorrow. I sent in both versions of the stock shocks for reverse engineering. We have been talking about it every week since the new year.

Randy, you are aware that the '84-87 oem and aftermarket (Penske) shock bodies are longer than the '89+ shock bodies?
