Title: PCV FLOW??
Post by: gripit_N_ripit on March 29, 2011, 10:00:36 AM
OK GUYS IM BACK!!!LOL i was messing with my fj that has 55000 on the odometer. i had the engine completely warmed up and was setting the idle i accidentally removed the pcv hose at the air filter box. i saw a pretty good stream of smoke coming out. now given the mileage i would expect to see some smoke but i would like to hear your input. thanks

Sounds like a problem.Where does the smoke come from ?

in my experience with cars. when you see smoke coming from the pcv usually means worn rings leaking combustion gases into the crankcase therefor exiting through the pcv. i think i'll try compression testing the motor dry/wet and that should tell me right? wondering how much is too much?

was it smoke or steam ?  how long had it been since the engine was previously running ?

how long was the engine idleing ?  did you have a fan going on the motor ?

KOokaloo!

looked and smelt like smoke. the motor has been running for 4 days after a year of sitting under cover. engine was idling for about 15-20 minutes with a fan blowing on the motor. no driveability concerns or engine miss. have not synched the carbs yet for lack of knowledge and confidence, but i did make a manometer and am talking myself into trying it soon. thanks

Have you changed the oil?  How old is the oil?

There may not be anything wrong.  Remember, the bottom of the pistons move as much air around as the combustion side.  As a result, there's a lot of airflow in the crankcase and you're probably just seeing it coming out the breather hose.

Just for that reason, never remove the oil filler cap when the engine is running unless you want an oil spray bath.  Also, never start the engine with the clutch slave cylinder unbolted, crankcase pressure will shoot the actuator rod across the garage.

Burning oil or oil vapor?

Run it into a clean rag (paper towel, etc) and see if it smells like oil or burnt oil once you've collected some.  Oil vapor isn't a surprise at all.  Burning oil would make me wonder about ring seal issues.

I changed the oil 4 days ago and put sae 10w40 in it. i am changing it right now just to be sure its clean. ALSO, i wanted the absolute best oil for this engine the parts store next to my shop sells MOBILE1 vtwin 20w50 for aircooled motorcycle engines, would this be ok to use? yamaha told me not to use anything but yamalube.

MOBILE1 vtwin 20w50

Might be transplant rejection issues! It should work but is pretty thick, unless the motor is really tired the clearances are tight enough that it doesn't need a heavy oil. Whoops, I think I just got suckered into posting an oil thread opinion, now I've done it.

If you use 20-40 you could have starter motor problems in cooler weather.
I believe the starter clutch won't engage.

I ran Mobil1 20/50 red cap for several years with no problems (down to 40F).

Below that, I'm takin the cage.

Now using Rotella T Synth

Thanks for all the great input. the yamaha parts guy scared me into using 20w 50 yamalube and i think the ol' fj likes it she doesnt smoke quite as much. BTW the smoke wasn't burning oil more like oil vapor, it didnt smell burnt.i also made the manometer (as per mr. white's thread) and synched the carbs and i must say.......i feel confident that it worked GREAT!!!! so easy and cool to see the vaccuum readings changed and dialed in evenly, it also really helped quiet this puppy down at idle. the noises dont scare me anymore. haha. THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH THIS FORUM IS A WEALTH OF INFORMATION AND YOU ALL ARE SO GREAT AND HELPFUL. THANKS.

Got pics of the manometer ?

I don't have any pics of the manometer, if you look under fj files you'll find marsh's post on how to make it and what you need (which is very little). i made mine exclusively from the info found there. he even has pics.
