Title: loose wheel bearing
Post by: Travis398 on March 27, 2011, 11:02:30 AM
Took my rear wheel off the other day and the wheel bearing fell out of the rim,  :scratch_one-s_head:  I assume this is not normal.

But I guess it makes changing the wheel bearings easy. has this happened to anyone else? Perhaps it is normal.

Did the entire bearing fall out? Or just the inner race and all the little balls? I have never seen the entire bearing fall out. These bearings need to be pressed in, if the new one drops in, STOP and repair or replace the wheel.

I have seen the outer race fall out a few times. no option but to either replace the wheel or have a machinist bore and bush it.

Bill is spot on.... the bearing should not be able to fall out of the wheel under any conditions

Well at least changing the bearing won't be very hard.

If the new one drops in with out a press fit, then it will be harder than you want. DO NOT ride with a bearing loose in the wheel. DO NOT bond/glue it in or attempt to shim out the loose fit. Don't risk your life and for heaven sake!!!...Don't put the FJ at risk.

Which wheel are we talking about? Your 16" on the '84 that you're replacing with the 17" ZX wheel?  Or the 3 spoke on your newer bike?
