Title: Hello from Salt Lake City, Utah
Post by: chainus on March 20, 2011, 09:31:18 PM
Hey all, I've been using this site for some time now to research the FJ and I just recently signed up. I have to admit that I have never participated in any forums, but I sure have used them to research motorcycles. This is obviously a great forum for the FJ, and it's been  instrumental in helping me with my decision to buy one. I look forward to participating.

I just bought a 1995 FJ 1200 ABS model with 19,000 miles. The original owner was in the military living in Japan and he apparently shipped it to the states. I will be the third owner. I got a little concerned when I read about engines for the Japanese Domestic market being restricted and putting out lower horsepower, but my engine type  is the "3XW" and apparently the Japanese domestic one is "4CC", so I think I'm good.

I will post some pictures soon.

Thanks, Kai

Welcome Kai.

I'm not too certain about the 3XW v 4CC thing.
My '91 was a Jap Domestic....... number is still 3XW........

Easiest way to tell is the speedo........... Domestics had 180KPH. If you tried to go any quicker the ignition was cut.

I've recently pulled the gauge cluster apart and can now tell you its easy to restore full Kookaloo.

The other thing with the JDs is the inlet manifolds have 28mm throats as opposed to the usual 32mm (or is it 33mm) of rest of the world models.

Welcome here Kia.

Thanks for talking the time to introduce yourself.  This is markedly better than your first post being 'hey I need this part' or 'how do I fix this?'

There are some mighty fine roads for motorcycles up your way, I remember thinking that when I was there skiing a couple of years ago.

A '95 FJ would be worth seeing as they stopped importing them to the US in '93.  Please do post pictures.  I wonder how/ if it differs from the '93?  I know it's a 3XW, but I also know manufactures can make fairly significant changes year over year within a given version, not the least being new factory paint colors.

Anyway, as I say, welcome here.

Dan

Yes indeed, welcome Kai. Please post picts of your '95. I'm curious as to the paint colors used on the '95's.
I sure enjoy your state of Utah. It's tops in my book, as having the most breathtaking vistas and sublime roads you could enjoy on a bike.
Instead of the "Beehive" state Utah should be renamed as the "Oh My God" state.

Cheers!  Pat

Thanks for the warm response you all, or y'all. Yeah, Salt Lake City is great, there are many scenic canyons very close by. I just need to get more dialed in to where the best rides are. My friend Sven knows all of the best nearby rides. He turned me on to the Mirror Lake Highway ride where you go through Evanston Wyoming and end up in the Uinta Mountains at about 11,000 feet before heading back in to Utah.

My speedo definitely goes to the higher limit. I'm going to have to learn how to convert miles from kms because I don't think the ociffers will buy that as an excuse for triple digit infractions.

I will definitely get some pics posted. I think I saw one bike in all of my Internet searches that might have the same color scheme, and I'm pretty sure it was on this site. I'll have to see if I can find it again. I think the wind screen might be different on my model as well. It has  kind of a scoop indention in the  middle and it seems to work quite well. Thus far I have been very impressed with the wind protection/deflection of the stock screen; of course I'm used to riding my naked 1975 BMW R90/6, so anything would be an improvement on that.

You could arguably find a used mph speedo and swap them.  Otherwise, 100kph = 62.5mph.  160kph = 100mph.  50kph = 31mph.  Not a hard conversion to do mentally, but much trickier when you see the cop ahead and the speed sign there and have 200 feet to get it figured out!

Yea, that's a pain, screw the numbers. I just remember where the position of the needle should be on the face of the speedo for 35mph and 55 mph.
