I'll be riding to Chapel Hill NC on Monday to hang out with my bro & his new family.
Tuesday I will head for Boone.
Anybody else have similar plans? Join me :good2:
KoOKalOOoo!
YEA! BOONE IS SOON!!!! Actually our getaway date is May 9th in the am. The SO and I are headed up to Southern Pines, NC first, then over to Sevierville, TN to pick up a "parts bike" for him, then heading to Boone by Sunday afternoon the 10th. So yep TRoy we'll be there that Tuesday as well. I spoke with my riding buddy NancyG a couple of days ago and she and Jack will be pulling in on Tuesday as well.
I'm going shopping for a LARGE coffee pot, not that little 12 cup thing. If anyone can think of anything else I need to bring, pass it on and I'll do my best to make it happen.

WELL, DUH! YES! And if we run out of rum cake, just buy some Twinkies and pour rum over them, just about the same thing.
Don't know yet which bike the SO may bring, his "technicolor terror" as his Sabre is now called or the much better looking Interceptor 1000 that he just got. The Interceptor isn't running right, something about the carbs, clutch and such, so who knows what he'll be riding. He just got home from a ride to Tellico to meet up with his sabre group last weekend. They stay over at Hunt's campground there on 68.

Hell, George, it's always a good Rally!
Great roads, great people, great food, old bikes, big fires and assorted tomfoolery. What's better than that?
Rossi
Hope you guys have the usual great rally. At least I won't be going thru complete withdraw. We have meetings all week in Kansas City. I'll be taking the FJR out there with three others from the office. Granted, it gets pretty flat on the other side of the Mississippi, but at least I'll be on the bike and not waiting in line for security at the airport with my shoes in my hand.
Chris are you riding out?

I did that last year on the Bandit. Detour through WV on 33 and some others then had to make time so we hopped back on 70. KC is not rider friendly. Take a bus. Left at 6 on the way back. Was going to rock the whole way home in one sitting but there was an accident in Columbus and I'd ditched the frequent stopper guy I was out there with that had the GPS. Only made the 700 or so miles by dinner time. I was bummed because I was feeling really good and knocking off the nascar gas stops left and right. I would have made it home the 1045 or so miles by bedtime.
Enjoy your trip.
Henry, my new 'girlfriend' Kris & i will be trailering the ol' FJ down, we'll see all of you soon!

Ah but beef jerky, now I can do serious damage with that!
15 more days till we leave....or maybe only 14 if the SO gets Friday off. I just love this not working thing, my schedule is now so flexible!

Hey Danny, can you please throw in the KOOKALUNATICS sticker that we talked about a couple months ago... don't look like I'll be able to make the run to Goshen Pass in the next couple weeks.
I have not been able to complete OPERATION MOBILEDRUM, I'm gonna carry it up to Deans place next weekend so's he can bring it in the Skoob.

Right after I said I still had it, I looked and couldn't find it. For years it laid in the bottom of one of my hard cases but it's not there now. anyway, I'll look around some more and will bring it if I can find it.

Current plan is to fly into Atlanta on Wednesday morning, meet up with Jeff, pack up and head out for Boone ASAP.
That's the good news and the plan.
Recent complications may force a last minute change of plans. A few months ago, I discovered a lump in the right side of my neck. Took several weeks to get to the Dr for a look-see. 4 doctors later, still no definitive diagnosis. Sonogram, followed by an MRI, then a needle biopsy revealed malignant cancer cells present in neck lymph node.
Good news is it is NOT lymphoma, blood is clean, and a chest X-ray shows nothing unusual.
Go to Ear-Nose-Throat who recommends a tonsilectomy, along with taking chunks out of the larynx, esophagus, vocal chords, and the back of the tongue. All parts test negative as to the source of the cancer cells. I am now classified as having an undiagnosed primary. This leads to a full body scan (PET scan) which, so far, has still not located the source of the cells. However, the good news from this scan is everything else appears to be clean (nothing in the stomach, liver, pancrease, brain, etc).
So, tomorrow I go in for a "neck dissection." Doesn't sound like any fun, but it will remove the lymph node and other "suspect" material in my neck. The doctor claims the recovery will be less painful than the tonsilectomy (which wasn't a picnic, but really wasn't too terribly bad). Two week recovery from this surgery puts me recuperating in a quaint Kabin in Boone for some nice rest/relaxation with my good friends, a small campfire, and a few motorcycles.
Early start of radiation and chemotherapy could affect these plans.
Holding my breath for Boone!!!

David,
oh man i hate to hear about that,
prayers are being offered up right now that this thing is localized and that you have a complete recovery.
Heal well David. I do very much hope it turns out to be nothing more than your basic tonsillectomy. My thoughts are with you.

David, sorry to hear. A clean PET scan and lymph systems certainly are good news though. Chemo sucks but worthwhile by all accounts. Two years ago this month my wife was diagnosed, did all the surgeries and treatments and free and clear now. Look forward to seeing you in Boone.
I have a couple buddies coming with me this year. No R1's! an older VFR and an ST13. They are renting a travel trailer somewhere at the KOA. One of these two guys has the potential to take over the title of most talked about rally visitor from "The Beer Scientist"..
Troy I'm still thinking I have a place in your cabin (?) Sounds like Smola and Eric are gonna be in there too.. if we're getting tight just say so. I think I have other options, no need to pack in like sardines.

Reservations are in, the SO and I should be up on Wed. morn. Look forward to seeing everyone again. Got some withdrawals from missing the 08 fall rally. Judging by the confirmations on Marshes site I didn't think this was going to be a very populated rally but call to Joanne at KOA suggests otherwise. Only space available, other than camping, is some travel trailer that sleeps six. see everyone there. :yahoo:

dan,
did you mention you're with the fj group? they're holding kabins for us, so that any joe calling the days we've reserved them will be told none are available. mention my name or the fj group just in case, if you didn't.
Looks like I am out.
Its been up in the air for a while, but my recent oops at Putnam Park, along with a few unexpected bills has made up my mind for me :flag_of_truce:. Ya'll have fun down there, and somebody PLEASE order Dean a sandwich other than that dried up shoeleather thing he usually gets.
Dean, the dirt bike is still available if you guys plan to play in the dirt, and I should have your dogbones ready in a day or two.
Don't do anything I wouldn't do...... :dash2:
FYI, looks like the KOA has a kabin reserved in my name that I wasn't aware of, but I don't think I'm gonna need it, since I was gonna drive the Serial-Killer Van.
I guess I could drive the Ranger instead, and get better MPG.

Well the bike just got a layer of dust washed off it. Now got to wash the same layer of dust off the dually. I love living in the country, but dusty dirt roads are a PITA. My whole list is about checked off of the "to-do's", one horse (mine) delivered to where he's spending the week. Jeff's mare stays here at home. But got a real bath, so everyone who was at Tellico last year, he won't stink.

Well everyone, here I sit in the hotel west of Atlanta and am thinking of the fun ya'll are having at the campground.
What an eventful day I had coming down here. One that I don't want to repeat anytime soon! And That's all I'll say, those of you back at the KOA know what my day entailed! Unfortunately the FJ is going to have to stay rachetted down till it gets home. But all of ya'll tell me know how tuff it is as a bike so hopefully it can recoup from that.
I did have a wonderful couple of days riding with TRoy and my best buddy NancyG. Frank told me long ago that I should ride with NancyG that she was the smoothest rider he'd seen. He's right of course. And yep I ride with her and love it. I get better everytime.

No Marsh, it isn't that kind of thing. Just that I had to play the "helpless female" and get a truck driver to help me pick the bike up on the trailer after it fell over and then tie it back down again. My heart fell when I looked in my rearview mirror and didn't see my bike.
PLUS, I went into a convenience store driveway and it was low and the jack scrapped and bent pretty badly, so it's not really holding the trailer up. That's why the bike is staying rachetted down.
Needless to say I'm still a wreck over it all. My FJ is my baby.
NancyK
Generally speaking, I've done more damage to bikes on trailers, while trailering, loading or unloading on trailers/ pickup trucks etc. than I have on the road while riding. Guess there's something to be said about riding vs. trailering...

ain't that the truth. I was once hauling my fj in my pickup from ca. to nevada so I could loan my truck to a friend and ride the bike back. As I was driving through a very curvy section of road(monitor pass) the right side tie down hook slipped out of the eye hook and and the bike sprung left. as luck would have it , I had left the kick stand down and the fj settled gently on the stand as I whipped the truck to the left to offset gravitational forces. no damage :yahoo:
I now fully rachet the forks all the way down when hauling the fj. some say it blows the seals . however seals are cheaper than body work and mirrors.

Trust me if the "camp dawg" could ride the bike I may try that, but since I had to work a horse show, it's just easier on me to do it this way. Plus my dawg does not ride the bike. AND all the roads coming out of FL to that section of the country is flat so that's no fun for me. So nope, my scooter just needs to learn to ride on the trailer.

back from boone, another great rally under my belt. hah, i just made a pun. great friends, great roads, great food. i left a day earlier than i usually do, as the forecast was for t/storms, and we already got a nice little 1.5 hour riding sampler of that yesterday, that was enough for my nerves.
i'll try and get some photos up on marsh's site. i took a few with my cell phone as well and posted those on facebook.
and yes, i did sissy out with bill's dirt bike. it appears he went to a lot of time and effort to get it in shape for me, he knows what a stickler i am for a clean, well-maintained, well-lubed machine.
bill---sidenote, i may give you some bike-wrenching business. i'm getting a nasty front end wobble when i have the bike leaned over to the left at speed. i had hoffman test ride it and he noticed it, too. suggestions have been wheel bearing, steering head bearings, who knows, maybe swingarm bearings? i'll give you a call this week.
Amen to that Dean, hell of a ride back to camp. The wet leaves, gravel, rivers of red mud, zero vis out through the face shield and the waves of spray from the passing school buses was just ugly at best :flag_of_truce:. It was great to see everyone, including several new faces. :good: Hope to see a the gang again in Tellico.
Hey Nancy, sorry to hear about the troubles on the way to Atlanta. I've never lost a bike (knock on wood) off a trailer or pickup, except for the time we left the MX races back in the early 70s and were so drunk after the event, we forgot to tie the bikes down. Fortunately they fell together and sort of locked into a big pile in the middle of the trailer :wacko3: The FJ is a bike heavy bike (duh) and requires some extra effort to keep safely restrained. Unfortunately it doesn't have a hollow rear axle so you have to rely on tieing the triples and rear grab handle. IMHO you do not have to cinch the bike down to full compression on the forks or shocks, but you do have to use high quality (read Ancra) tie downs with a full 180 degree hook on the end. A soft tie around the lower triple (not the bars) to an Ancra and then another soft tie around the rear grab handle to an Ancra mildly cinched should do the trick. It's OK for the bike to move (IMHO) a little but not much, if you get into an evasive left right left deal, you don't want the hooks coming loose. You can bend triples, subframes etc. if you put too much tension on the tie downs, per the guys and GMD Computrak in Atlanta and they know their stuff. On the blown seals think, IMHO (again) I think it's a myth, bikes come tied down from the mfg. Per Jeffman, the cause of leaking seals from over compression is a bit of crud on the normally "unused" portion of the fork tube getting up under the seal and causing it to leak. Sometimes you can clear it out with a piece of 35mm film inserted under the seal and sweeping the bit of crud out.
