Dont be afraid.... the dark side welcomes you.. Look at it as a worthwhile investment... Many owners had made their bikes even better than new. The FJ is a great bike from the factory and I enjoy seeing stock bikes in great shape. But with some time and some dollars you can upgrade them into a more modern machine, either way they are big fun to ride.

Slick, this is what i know
The PO was a motorcycle drag racer. he was also a motorcycle genius. he would walk into a dealership, buy 2 or more bikes, take them home and work his magic. he did custom paint jobs, engine rebuilds, chop and bob jobs to everything that rolled into his shop. he would then turn around and sell them for double or triple what he payed for them. He got this FJ1200 and loved it to much to change it drastically, he rode it to and from work everyday. however he did add mods to the engine of which i am unsure of as i am not a mechanic. he also added some sort of booster system cause there are switches everywhere that dont do anything now. but what worries me is that i have no idea why he sold it. but the bike has 40,000 miles on it, vance and hines exhaust, tarozzi brake/shift levers, and Michelin racing tires (thats just what i can visually see). I bought the bike for $1995 and its worth every penny! :yahoo:

Sounds like you got yourself one mean machine. The guy probably sold it because he out grew it. When you are someone who likes to work on things (me) it gets a little boring once you do everything you want done. Thats just my guess. With 40K, it sounds like he had his fun. Chris, did you ever find him? (PO) I wonder if he bought the bike new?
Did the Harley guys give you a Carfax showing the history of the bike, like are there any liens? how many times it was sold? is it a salvage title? etc, etc.....
Pat, i have no idea what the bike has been through, the dealership wont call or email me back, but the bike works, the fairings arent scratched and it sounds crazy good so im ok with not knowing (unless thats a huge newbie thing to say for some technical reason)
Looked up a few maps and I will put money on that bike having likely been down the 1320 at Gainesville (http://www.gainesvilleraceway.com/). If you fancy an adventure some nice weekend, take a ride down there and park someplace visible (or hell, make a pass or two, be warned that it's super addictive!) and I'll bet someone will either recognize the bike or even the PO will come over if he sees it that day....
Sadly their website doesn't have a picture archive, so I wasn't able to find pictures of the guy riding it :(
