Title: New XJR1250 carbs; How do they work on an FJ?
Post by: TheRadBaron on March 16, 2011, 10:35:11 PM
My original '84 FJ11 carbs are in need of so many parts that I'm considering going with a set of these XJR1250 carbs that are being sold for about $400.  I guess the Legends guys end up with a bunch that they don't need.
I know that some members here have bought them.  How are they working out for you?  I know that they need some mods to work without the fuel pump, but how's the actual carburation?
Does the jetting they come with work out okay?  I imagine that the mains and pilots might need to be swapped depending on your set up, but are the needles, emulsion tubes, etc. good?
Has anyone noticed a difference between them and the original carbs?  Does the bike run better?  Not as good?
Sorry about all the questions, I just want to get some opinions before I buy a rack of them.  Thanks.

TRD

I am going to put a set on my 86 gravity system, so if you don't need them soon.
I should have feed back in a week our two. Now that we can finaly see our the roads.
I have not herd any bad reports with these carbs. I'm just trying to help my FJ family members.
I have sold a bunch of these.

Well, I just got done installing mine and went for a test ride.  All seems to be very well.  Granted, I never rode this bike with the original carbs, or any other FJ for that matter to compare it to, but it runs like a bat outta hell with the new XJR carbs.
I swapped the fuel inlet fittings and needle seats as has been discussed elsewhere, and I put in a set of David's stainless screws.
My new carbs came with 110 mains and 37.5 pilots.
They came with non-adjustable needles, but I have a set of brand-new adjustable FJ12 needles that I installed.  The needles have the same number and taper, the only difference is the adjustability.  I put the clip in the #3 slot.  I swapped the 110 main jets for 125 Mikuni's.  I kept the 37.5 pilots, pulled the brass plugs out of the idle mixture screw wells, and set them at 2 turns out.  I swapped the 155 air correction jets for 140 Mikuni's.
I checked the float levels on the bench and they were all spot on out of the box.
This seems to be a pretty good baseline.  The bike pulls hard across the rev range and idles nicely.  The idle might be a bit rich, but not too bad.  I can probably dial it in a little better, but I think that I'll wait for it to get a bit warmer out.
