Just about ready to paint the chin fairing on my 86 and am curious what colors others have used to match the Yamaha Silky White with. The fairing has had some cracks repaired more than once, and has bondo in it, so I don't think its worth spending the money on the materials to do a proper tri-color paint job. I plan on putting a base clear on it with decals made up and then clear over everything.

Can the Dupli-color Ford oxford white be matched to an automotive paint? I am not a body/paint guy so any help would be appreciated.

Key to making the paint look right is to spray silver pearl coat over the white.
I don't recall what color white I used (have to out to the garage and look at the can)
but it needs ot be a very "clean" white. I've painted a couple of tanks and side covers now,
and they are very close to looking factory.

Thanks Mike. That is the best way to go I am sure, but I am only going to do a base clear on this. All I need is the paint, as a buddy of mine has just finished painting a bumper and has the reducers and hardeners and clear ready to go. This is a budget job on a not so perfect chin fairing.
I just got back from TopShops. I took my spare tank with me, and they scanned it and came up with an Isuzu white something.(don't have the code right now) This is a base paint that will be cleared. It looks a little grayish to me, but once the clear is applied it should brighten up a bit. I hope. I will post some pics and do a follow up after painting is completed.

You don't need a whole lot of paint. A 4oz can will be more than enough to paint the entire bike (once it is thinned and reduced) if you wanted to.
Depending on if the white has a pearl effect or not will determine how much paint you buy. On my '87 there is a pearl effect and that requires three stages. The base coat (white), translucent mid coat (pearl effect) then the top (clear) coat.
I used a basic black color for the stripe on the chin faring. IIRC I paid around $100 for just the paint in 4oz cans.
You can buy the paint from www.colorrite.com (http://www.colorrite.com). I checked a while back and they do sell the silky white for Yamahas -- no guess work-- it is a few stages like you said.
There is also a place out of Canada that sells clear coat in a rattle can. Its in a funky can that you actually have a actuator of some type at the bottom of the can you need to activate first (two part paint) and then spray but you said you are not using the rattle can so I won't elaborate too much
The clear coat rattle can is called SprayMax 2k. PS a friend used it and it looked good -- can says Highest Weather resistance... /ok for the gas spills.
Painting and graphics are finished. Once I bring the bike home I can install the refurbed fairing.
It was sprayed with a base white that was scanned at TopShops here in Barrie. Then clear coated with a flexable clear used for bumpers. Not sure of product, as my buddy just finished spraying a bumper, and had lots of product left over to do my fairing. All I had to supply was 1/2 pint of base paint.

Here it is just freshly sprayed. We were a little concerned it came out a little too dark/greyish. But once the clear was applied, it brightened right up. Looks better in the sun.

Graphics were made up by AutoTrim a local graphics shop from a photo and measurements of original. I think it turned out excellent.

Its not perfect and is not the tri-color original but is a very inexpensive alternative way to bring it back to looking decent. It cost me less than 20 bucks in paint, 50 bucks for the vinyl/graphics work, some help from a friend and a bunch of elbow grease.
