Title: Repainting Cooling 'Fins'
Post by: eddohawk on February 24, 2011, 06:46:07 PM
Hi there

The paint on my FJ's cylinder head cooling fins is cracking/peeling off and in need of a repaint. I'm thinking a light sand with wet and dry and then using a heat resistant engine paint without an undercoat. I would like to try and get the color/appearance as close as possible to factory original so should I use a gloss paint or semi gloss?

Regards

Mark

Calvin re did his with gloss and i think it turned out nice.

i believe he used enamel paint but i'm not sure.... i know the finish has held up real nice over the past 8-9 years i've known him.

I'll see if i can get some more information for you.

High Heat gloss black works well and looks good

I'd use a soda blaster to clean the old stuff off, sanding between fins'd be a bitch.....

I ended up using some high temperature stove/BBQ paint I found at home depot.  Held up well for the most part. Making sure you've got a good surface to paint is key.  I made a soda blaster from some instructions I found to strip the paint. It worked ok i'm sure a store bought one would have done better. Soda
