my 84' has 85k miles 3rd gear slip's out into a neutral spot at around 4k rpm I have another engine and plan on useing the 3rd gear. Never done it before looking for a place out here in South San Francisco area to do the work, any ideas?

Drive inland to Oakdale, and have Randy @ RPM do the work for you...
