Title: Larger oil cooler
Post by: billwest on February 09, 2011, 08:47:06 AM
Those of you with a larger oil cooler, do you add more oil to cater for the extra capacity, ie fill the sump above the indicated line?

Bill.

You only need to over fill if your dumping oil while in motion. Maybe a chain oiler that is plumbed to the case, or a seal that is way over due for replacement. Are you blowing copious amounts of smoke out the ass end?

Filling the sump above the top of the sight window causes several problems.

1. It can cause oil to be blown into the airbox at high RPM soaking your air filter and killing bugs for miles around.

2. The crankshaft may start running through the oil causing a parasitic loss of HP.

I'll have to take some pics of my 13 row cooler and plumbing.
Had a $300 Earls on it for years. It finally cracked last summer. Found a cheap ($100) kknock off on ebay. Looks just like the Earls.

Only when I fill up on beans.............

No, no oil usage to speak of.  At the moment I still fill up to the line only.
